Product Description

Review

"PRINCE 2: a practical handbook, is a good example of a book written by project people for project people. The book complements the CCTA PRINCE 2 manual where the framework of the PRINCE 2 methodology is established. It offers good advice and suggestions on how to implement and utilise PRINCE 2 pragmatically in order to achieve a successful project. The book will be especially useful to those who wish to make use of PRINCE 2 to manage smaller scale projects. A useful addition to any project manager's reference" - The PRINCE User Group Ltd.

Product Description

PRINCE 2: a practical handbook is aimed at readers who want to learn what the PRINCE 2 method is all about, intend to implement it, are the clients of a contractor who will use it, or will participate in a project being managed according to PRINCE 2 guidelines. It describes each of the components, processes and techniques.

This book:
* relates PRINCE 2 to the practical issues of setting up and running a project
* provides a clear picture of how using PRINCE 2 provides a business like to start a project, ensuring its viability and the effective use of resources before any large scale expenditure is undertaken.
* covers the main management concerns about a project; project initiation, controlling products, quality, risks, change and project closure.
* concludes with descriptions of the normal management products of a project, and role descriptions to fit all the defined roles.

Colin Bentley was one of the co-authors of the PRINCE 2 manual, published by The Stationery Office on behalf of the CCTA. For 22 years he has been involved with PRINCE and its predecessor PROMPT II and is widely recognised as one of the leading authorities on the method. He works with the APM* Group to set examination papers and accredit trainers and training courses in PRINCE 2.

This publication has been reviewed by the technical committee of the PRINCE User Group Ltd., and has been assessed as conformant with the concepts of PRINCE Version 2.

*The APM Group is part of the Association of Project Managers and works with the CCTA to publicise and develop the PRINCE method.

2.0 out of 5 stars The least practical book you'll ever read, 1 July 2004
Despite the title, you can expect nothing in the way of how to run a Prince2 project. As the chief examiner for the Prince2 exams, he probably had a lot of input into the course book. Shame, because he simply regurgitates it here. There are a mere 2 real world examples given, one of which is how to book a restuarant...
Worse still, the writing is terrible. He's obtuse, humourless and characterless. It makes for slow reading, and without any real practical advice, it can be a struggle to make it to the end.
Finally, the index has been corrected, only for him to miss out a couple of appendices. Nice touch.
It avoids 1 star because in conjunction with the handbook, there are some useful nuggets here, especially about cost benefit analysis. However, they're so few and far between, I'd give it a wide birth.

3.0 out of 5 stars A good book made average by an incorrect index, 11 Feb 2002
By A Customer
This is a good reference for PRINCE2, or at least it would be if the index didn't appear to come from a version of the book that was nearly 100 pages shorter.

If you never use an index, then consider this a 4 star review, but if -- like me -- you need an index to use a reference book on a daily basis then you'll find this a chore. Example: "Risk Management" is listed as being on page 146, when it's actually dealt with in a chapter that starts on page 197.

When you do find the information, it is clearly and concisely represented, but I'd suggest checking with the publisher that the index has been fixed before ordering.

2.0 out of 5 stars Er, where's the project management?, 16 July 2002
Ironic that a book professing the all-seeing, omnipresent wizardry of PRINCE 2 didn't itself take heed to the section on project control. Quite obviously this book was published in such a rush that they left the proof-reading to...well, I don't think they actually did it at all. There is no table of contents and the index is full of errors completely unsatisfactory. The Quality, Cost and Time Triangle should be renamed 'crap we're running out of time, just publish the thing, what's proof-reading?'. The layout of the book is bad and hard to follow with no indication of where things should be found or coherence of pregression. It's only after a couple of hours trying to work out how the book is structured that you start to get a feel for how to use it. Otherwise the content is good and fairly comprehensive, except the two-line paragraphs on 'Small Projects' which basically all read 'don't ignore the above on your small projects'! Thanks for the advice, big help!
