Amazon.co.uk Review

Jake Gyllenhaal's doe eyes and bulging biceps will make some hearts flutter in Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time. Dastan (Gyllenhaal), adopted prince of the Persian empire, must flee into the desert when accused of murdering his royal father--but a glass-handled dagger he found as loot from a captured city turns out to hold powerful time-manipulating magic. Not only is he pursued by his vengeful brothers, his scheming uncle (Ben Kingsley, Sexy Beast), and a strange cabal of assassins, but a princess/priestess named Tamina (Gemma Arterton, Quantum of Solace) wants the dagger back and will kill Dastan if she has to. Prince of Persia wants to be a rollicking adventure along the lines of Pirates of the Caribbean. Unfortunately, it's hampered by clumsy dialogue and hard-to-follow action sequences, with choppy editing that wrecks the flow of the parkour-inspired stunts. But the production design is extravagant and every time Alfred Molina (Spiderman 2) appears as a greedy sheik the movie gets a delightful jolt of energy. Gyllenhaal doesn't have much to work with--Dastan is a fairly generic hero--and whoever designed his hair should have been fired on the first day, but his lazy charm comes through and carries him through the movie. --Bret Fetzer

In the spirit of the Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy, Walt Disney Pictures and Jerry Bruckheimer Films transport you to the mystical lands of Persia for this wildly entertaining, epic action-adventure. It's a race against time when a rogue prince (Jake Gyllenhaal) reluctantly teams up with a rival princess (Gemma Arterton) to safeguard a magical dagger that gives its possessor the power to reverse time and rule the world. Filled with death-defying escapes and unexpected twists at every turn, Prince Of Persia: The Sands Of Time is a fun-filled adventure that will keep your pulse pounding long after the credits end.

A great swashbuckle 27 Nov 2010

For all who have enjoyed the Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy then this is a must. Lavishly set with fabulous costumes, a sexy hero, beautiful heroine and a villianous villain there is little more to ask for .... and yet? There is so much movement and action that at time it is difficult to keep up with the plot and several viewings are essential. Jake Gyllenhaal proves that he is miles away from his Brokeback Mountain role because here he plays with virility and fervour and a well honed physique. It took me a little time to get to like Gemma Arterton's princess but once she gives her allegiance to Jake's rogue prince I got on fine. Ben Kingsley give his usual villain and I much enjoyed an almost unrecognisable Alfred Molina who provided good clever comic relief. Just one star off the mark from being a great adventure.

I enjoyed this film, and so did my kids. Jake Gyllenhaal makes a very good Dastan, and Gemma Arterton is beautiful as Tamina. Ben Kingsley again makes the perfect villain. The concept of the film is based on the game which was released in 2003 for XBOX, PS2, NGC and PC. Maybe Jake Gyllenhaal and Gemma Arterton will reprise their in a sequel if one is made, after all - there's a few games now.

Prince of Persia 30 Oct 2010
By Spider Monkey HALL OF FAME TOP 50 REVIEWER
`Prince of Persia' is one of those films that seems like it should be really good, but after viewing it leaves you feeling rather deflated and disappointed. Most elements seem to be there, stunning set pieces, a reasonable story premise (although the plot execution let it down), beautiful costumes, impressive parkour style stunts and big budget effects and yet it gets sorely let down in other areas. The story gets so ridiculous in places that it is a film you need to suspend disbelief to truly enjoy it and the acting is pretty wooden from all involved. This is especially disappointing from Gyllenhaal who has acted well in past films and from Molina who acts like a character from Pirates of the Caribbean, with the most ludicrous accent for a man who lives in the middle east (it's more east end!). Towards the end this turns into a weak Indiana Jones wannabe, with a temple of doom and booby traps, but it can never compete. There is also meant to be a romance between Gyllenhaal and Arterton but rarely have I seen such a lack of chemistry between two actors. These aspects, along with the poor plot execution make this a chore to watch and hard to fully enjoy. It is one of those films you will have been glad to have not wasted money on seeing at the cinema and it is only worth buying if you can pick it up very cheap. You will watch it once and probably never again. Shame, it could have delivered so much more.
