Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

The original 2-D Prince of Persia has always been acknowledged as the inspiration for the original Tomb Raider and it's easy to see why--it has the same mixture of running, jumping and platform climbing mixed in with tricky Indiana Jones-style puzzles and sword fights (though, okay, Lara prefers an AK47 to a scimitar). These days, however, there's one big difference between the Prince and La Croft: Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time is miles better than Tomb Raider: The Angel of Darkness.

The game features some quite extraordinary graphics and animation as the prince leaps and jumps with amazing grace and makes a number of moves inspired by Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. The controls are a dream too, especially during combat, and even the camera system--usually the Achilles heel of any 3-D adventure--is great, zipping to a fixed position if it looks like any of the scenery is going to get in the way.

The Sands of Time has a bunch of new ideas to add to the usual mix, most notably the chance to control time itself. Each of the demonic monsters you fight will spill a quantity of magical sand when they die and you can use this to power the dagger of time and rewind, slow down or fast-forward time. This allows you to instantly recover from unexpected deaths and allows you to concentrate on having fun and playing the game. Excellent stuff. --David Jenkins

"Move think and fight... Prince of Persia excels at every aspect of the trinity. 9/10."

5.0 out of 5 stars A great return for a classic game, 28 Dec 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time (GameCube) (Video Game)
The previous reviewer clearly hasn't played this game; three stars indeed! This game is a true classic in its own right, even without its pedegree heritage; its stunningly beautiful, fabulously paced and one of the best games set to grace your console in 2004.

Prince of Persia sees you place the part of a very acrobatic, sword wielding prince, who must dart, leap, bounce and bound his way a beautifully realised ancient arabic palace, collecting the mystical "Sands of Time". The game is as much about momentum and precision of movement as anything; the challenge lies in working out just how to get the prince to that seemingly unreachable ledge or platform, and then seemlessly executing a series of smooth and beautifully animatied spins and vaults, bouncing off walls and swinging from flag poles or lights to reach it. One of the key game mechanics is that the sand you collect can be used up in order to effectively rewind time (hence sands of time!); So if you mess up a section you can just go back and try again; this leads to a greater sense of freedom to experiment and try out all the seemingly impossible possibilities that a lead character with quite such acrobatic abilities has to offer.

Combat is not particularly complex, but spectacular none the less, and the prince is as flamboyant a swordsman as he is when jumping and running around the stunning landscape. Downsides to the game; well, the camera is a little annoying at times, and doesn't always keep up with the prince, particularly when negotiating particularly complex areas, but if it really causes you a problem you can always just rewind time and try again!

To sum up, this game is a must buy! If you only like games with lots of blood and big guns, then maybe its not for you, but if you want a game that tests your skill and imagination, then the prince will prove a very rewarding companion!

5.0 out of 5 stars Stunning, in every sense of the word, 24 Feb 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time (GameCube) (Video Game)
This title came through my letter box on the saturday, I didn't move from my TV for 2 days, and after that only because I had to attend lectures, its just that good. Fans of the original will recognise old gameplay elements BUT this is no ordinary update because they will also quickly notice just how much is new, most noteable the ability to control time and correct your mistakes (you'll make a lot).
Plot is sparse but what is there is very compelling and the game ends very well in my opinion. This is a game for people who like to test their reflexes and their brains, the fighting system is not the focus however it is still enjoyable. The controls are completley intuitive on this version, the graphics, surprisingly for the gamecube seem even clearer and more vivid than those on the XBox.
The worst thing I can say about the title is its completley linear and only taking 8 hours to complete it will be over before you want it to be, but what a ride, and at this price who can resist?

And with the original Prince of Persia included for an hour of retro heaven there shouldn't be a gamer out there without this title.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sands of Time, 7 Jan 2005
This review is from: Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time (GameCube) (Video Game)
A great game for those who like Real Time Battles. Younger childeren will need help with some of the long-winded battles as they can be tough, but it does depend on the players strategies. This game has more than just unexpected battles, but puzzles and corridors of traps that need to be dodged while trying to get to the timed closing door. The prince has the abilities of Time: Freeze, Rewind and Slow. He also has multiple fighting combos that require trial and error on all enemies. You'll never master them all due to the wide range of new enemies as the game progresses. This is DEFINATLEY one for the collection.
