5.0 out of 5 stars An European Soldier 8 July 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
From France to Turkey, the name of Eugene of Savoy is presented in very many places.
His statues can be found in Germany, Hungary, Austria, etc.
Though the book is written sometime ago, the presentation of the Prince, the places and people are described in detail in a very alert and attracting style.
I would very much like to read a more comprehensive and up to date study of this modest and dedicated European Soldier.

3.0 out of 5 stars Nice biography of Eugene of Savoy but not deep enough for military history! 16 Nov 2010
By Steve - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
Hi all,

I personally thought that this book did nothing in regards to understanding the nuts & bolts of the military battles of Eugene of Savoy, whom Napoleon praised as part of his "7 generals to study for a complete treatise on war."

This book does give English speaking readers more information regarding the life of Eugene of Savoy & his military career but NO military maps showing orders in key battles or any units of the time period are shown.

Also, NO tactics of the time period are revealed either.

As the owner of Emperor's Press said to me: "You've got to approach Eugene obliquely via Marlborough to understand what he did."

Insofar as a more recent military history is concerned, "Prince Eugen of Savoy" by Nicholas Henderson was created under the advice of both Christopher Duffy & David Chandler, which is a much more solid military history than this!

Ultimately, one must be able to read French as Eugene along with Turenne & Conde's were French & most military history about these 3 greats would be found in that language.

Cheers!
