Product Description

The leopard is one of the most beautiful Great Cats in creation, and is now endangered in many countries. This fact led Arjan Singh, the celebrated Indian wildlife expert, to attempt a daring experiment: rear a leopard cub in his house and return it to the jungle. The story of how Arjan Singh taught Prince and then the twins Juliette and Harriet the ways of the forest is enthralling from start to finish. Sharing his whole life with them, building them machans (tree platforms), walking the jungle tracks in their company, encouraging them to hunt, teaching them to disembowel their kills, he came to know the ways and character of the leopard as no man has before. His first great success came when Prince at last took to the jungle, fully re-habilitated. There were setbacks, it is true. Prince and Harriet each killed one human child, and the author's local critics were vociferous in their opposition. Yet Arjan Singh was supported by Mrs Indira Ghandi, then Prime Minister of India, and in 1976 he was awarded the World Wildlife Fund's Gold Medal for his conservation work. Not only did the author succeed in returning a hand-reared predator to the forest, he also scotched the fallacy that leopards are treacherous and unpredictable. On the contrary, he demonstrated the 'essential tranquility' of the leopard's temperament, and showed that it is only the animal's intelligence, combined with its capacity for effective retaliation when cornered which has given it a bad name. Although Arjan Singh achieved his aim, this inevitably meant the painful separation from these magnificent creatures he came to know and love so well.

Arjan Singh shows a level of commitment and determination towards his conservation work that should be an inspiration to us all. When faced with local opposition and losses so heartbreaking, many would have wondered how they could carry on. Arjan Singh did carry on and I'm so glad that he did. The work he has accomplished has proved that one man and his hard work can move mountains in terms of conservation and rehabilitation into the wild.

As someone who has worked for 30 years with zoo animals and wildlife, I read this book with interest. Billy Singh accomplished what many thought impossible - to raise and introduce a carnivore into the wild where it would live self-sufficiently and establish a home range. He shows more understanding of the leopard mind than the other famous big cat personality - Joy Adamson - did when she worked with leopards in Shaba province in Kenya. Billy Singh also shows what tremendous patience is required and how never to judge your animal - they will always surprise you. I learned a lot about India per se and the huge pressure of humanity on the wilder areas of the subcontinent.

What a shame this breed of naturalist is dying out now. Shame for India - shame for us.

This account of a man's attempt to re-introduce leopards to an area in northern India is a wonderful read to really take you away from it all.

Mr. Singh is not only a skilled conservationist, he is also an accomplished writer and a very congenial host as he invites you into the marvellous, far-away world on his doorstep.

Be warned, there is sadness as well as wonder; both tragedy and triumph. But it all adds up to a very special insight into the lives of these marvellous animals.

A truly remarkable man, and a truly remarkable book. An enthralling story I will always remember. So glad I picked it up somewhere. Highly recommended.
