5.0 out of 5 stars Phil gets that difficult all instrumental solo thing right, 5 May 2005
As we know, Phil Manzanera is one of the great masters of electric rock guitar; he created his own highly charged technique, 'drenched in sustain and reverb' as Rolling Stone once put it. You can hear that grand style on Roxy Music's early releases, solo albums by Brian Eno, John Cale, and others, and on Manzanera's own mid 70's output with a revolving cast of stellar musicians: Diamond Head, 801 Live, Listen Now and K-Scope.

1982'S Primitive Guitars was Manzanera's first solo effort and his first entirely instrumental album- give or take the odd bit of studio chatter. It's an immersion in the possibilities of world music, with a strong South American flavor, as well as ambient experiments, grounded by jazzier and more strident and hard to categorize compositions. I hadn't heard anything quite like it; as with Eno's Here Come The Warm Jets or Roxy's For Your Pleasure from the previous decade, Primitive Guitars pointed out one direction serious 80's rock might have taken if it had ventured beyond the pale of Punk/New Wave and the Boss.

The album is culled from years of Phil's mostly DIY recordings, with Phil playing and double tracking most of the instruments, including drum machines. There is an absence of fiery solos and hooks ala Roxy and Eno; though there is a lot of amazing playing. In the quieter moments, found sounds and other collage effects create a 'live' atmosphere and mood. Guitar, acoustic and electric, is the dominant instrument, but may not seem to be, as it is altered in mysterious and 'primitive' ways. Some cuts may seem to go on a bit, saved by intelligent editing. Twenty years on, Primitive Guitars stands as a testament to Manzanera's sophisticated guitar innovations.

Look for this one, the re-mastered Expression release ( Manzanera's own label) with bonus cuts.
