Product Description

Product Description

Charlie Patton is considered by many to be the single most important figure in the history of traditional blues as performer, influence and inspiration. The combined power of his vocal and guitar dynamics is unparalleled, and his legacy is an imposing body of powerful and eloquent music. This collection focuses on the wide breadth and scope of Patton's repertoire - in addition to his unparalleled primitive blues there are powerful early back-country rags, gospel songs and more. These performances are the Dead Sea scrolls of early black rural music. For this release Yazoo has re-mastered these classic recordings in the finest sound reproduction.

Fantastic remastering of , who for me , is the "king of the delta blues, Charlie Patton. Awesome restoration and fidelity on both this and Yazoo's other Patton comp " The best of Charlie Patton". Buy both - you won't regret it.

HASH(0x9b5147f8) out of 5 stars You can actually understand some of the words he sings!!!!!! 8 Jun. 2005
By The Levee Lounge Lizard - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
This is the 1st decently restored cd I've heard of Charlie Patton, although I don't mind in the least hearing a scratchy 78, but it is sort of a revelation to be able to understand some of the words Patton is singing, since previously all of his cd compilations have been from scratchy 78's and little remastering. This cd is great to have in addition to the 5 cd bootleg set from the UK. This is the best single disc, and even if you have ALL of Patton't works, as I did, this cd is still well worth owning to hear these sides cleaned, as they heard them back in 1929 when the records weren't so beat up. Great remastering job, without taking away from the integrity of the recordings. 5 1/2 stars all the way!!! CLASSIC music, a desert island disc indeed.

HASH(0x9b51484c) out of 5 stars Yazoo makesThe ONLY Charley Patton cd's worth buying! 9 April 2008
By Ralph Deluca - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
Once again Yazoo makes the best quality reissues of the early blues. I buy and collect Charley Patton 78 RPM records, and this and Yazoo's other Patton cd's are the only ones that I have listed to that can match and in some cases surpass the quality of the original shellac record. A Must own for any fan of serious student of the blues or pre-war American music.

HASH(0x9d28a810) out of 5 stars Fantastic Sound 12 Nov. 2007
By Lee C. Grady - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
I second the other reviewer - this is the best sound I've heard for these Patton records. I've been listening to these songs for over twenty-five years, first on vinyl, then on a couple of different CD compilations (including the budget JSP set). Listening to this CD, however, is like hearing them for the first time. Outstanding! My only complaint is the lack of discographical details - a failing of all of Yazoo's releases. In the end, the music is the most important thing, and this CD brings Patton's music to life like never before. Also check out this disc's companion on Yazoo, the "Best of Charlie Patton".

HASH(0x9b514ad4) out of 5 stars The Delta Original 15 May 2012
By Dr. Debra Jan Bibel - Published on Amazon.com

Most folks purchase the "Best of..." album, and in doing so they miss these other, more varied and core tunes. The album title is of interest because, as Elijah Wald pointed out his history of early blues, the blues was at first not called that. It was a time of rags and even if we recognized the 12-bar blues, they were at first called a rag or a reel. John Handy and Ma Rainey's music referred to the emotion rather than a style, but the association of emotion and musical style took root. The sound quality here is very fine considering the source material from 1929 and 1930. The insert notes give detailed description of each track. Patton had three guest artists on some tracks: Henry Sims, fiddle; Willie Brown, guitar; Bertha Lee, vocals. While Southern Black vaudeville artists were belting out blues-like popular tunes, the release of earthy, country tunes by Patton caused a sensation and he, too, became popular, creating a niche in the early record industry and influencing other Delta musicians. This album is worthy for any student of the early blues.
HASH(0x9b514a74) out of 5 stars Must-have Delta blues 17 Sept. 2014

Charlie Patton's cement-mixer voice startles with its depth and elasticity; his dynamic command of his guitar is even more surprising. If you didn't know better you might think there was another person playing guitar with Charlie (in fact, there is another guitarist on a couple of the tracks). In tandem with his wife, Bertha Lee (a thrilling voice in her own right), Charlie Patton gives us a different kind of church. Only the hardest of hearts could listen to this music without feeling connected to something far bigger and brighter than themselves. Charlie Patton is known as "the father of the blues" for good reason.
