5.0 out of 5 stars Brillant overview that lacks critical element, 27 May 2001
By A Customer
'A Primer on Postmodernism' offers a first class overview of the historical background and primary themes operating within post-structuralist theory. In particular the chapter that examined the prelude to post-modernism and the chapter dealing with key post-modern philosophers provided an overview that captured the key thoughts in a clear, concise, intellegent and non patronising manner. Most of the key thinkers are mentioned in the text alongside significant quotations from their work. The author draws substantially from primary texts throughout the book and dilegently backs up his analyisis with references to the work of key post-modern thinkers.

If I were to mention one significant drawback it would be that there is no explicit critical engagement with post-modern theory. As a description the book offers an exellent introduction, however information on critiques of post-modern theory (such as the neo-kantian critical theory of Jurgen Habermas or the linguistics of John Searle) would have added an element that seemed to be lacking. Despite this lack of critical engagement the book is well worth purchasing.
