4.0 out of 5 stars well organized summary of Freud's work, 23 Aug 1998
By A Customer
As would be expected, the Ego, Superego, and Id are prominent players in Professor Hall's summation of Freudian theory. A less well known facet of Freudian principles, the role of psychic energy in the development of personality, is prominently featured; Hall labels this Freud's most brilliant discovery. Thought it is a slim volume, the information is dense. The entire body of Freud's work that Hall is summarizing was originally published in several thousand pages. To attempt to highlight the more important passages would result in the entire text colored in yellow highlighter. In short, the book itself is a well-organized, clearly presented set of notes on Freudian theory.

3.0 out of 5 stars A short introduction to Freud, 13 Dec 2008
This is a short introduction to Sigmund Freud's (1856-1939) psychology. As a practicing psychologist he was one of the firm believers in psychotherapy, which meant the kind of a "talking-out-your-problems" therapy.

Unfortunately, in English Freud's three key terms have been translated as "the id," "the ego" and "the superego." But the coined terms are actually misleading when in his native German he wrote of "das Es," "das Ich" and "das Über-Ich," which respectively in literal English translation would have meant "the It," "the I" and "the Over-I." (This issue wasn't mentioned in the book, though...)

One could probably argue about the terms endlessly - but if you ask my opinion - while reading Freud in English, I would personally perceive "the id" as "the instinctual drive," "the ego" as "the mind" (like in Jung's case) and "the superego" as somekind of an ego-related adapted conscience. Thanks. But study Jung rather than Freud in case you haven't studied neither. Because Freud's views are annoyingly sexual!
