Newly-promoted Detective Superintendent Jane Tennison (Helen Mirren) investigates a missing child case at London's Southampton Row. The trail leads to serial sex offender Chris Hughes, recently released from a custodial treatment centre. When an arrest attempt backfires, Tennison finds herself caught up in a siege situation.
Early in 'The Lost Child' (the fifth episode in the 'Prime Suspect' series) Jane Tennison is shown entering hospital to have her pregnancy terminated; intercut with this is the crime that forms the core of the story: the apparent abduction of a baby. The strain Tennison experiences - the "loss" being investigated recalling her own recent loss - is exquisitely evoked by Mirren. And others are also adversely affected by the grim case: the normally reliable DI Muddyman, haunted by memories of how he himself was abused, breaks down and assaults a suspect. Altogether, it's a great piece of drama.
This episode is only around 1 hour 50 minutes long compared to the earlier "Prime suspects", which were over three hours. The quality doesn't really suffer though.
Here DCI Tennison is trying to solve the case of an 18 month old baby that goes missing from the care of its single mother. A man living nearby has convictions for crimes against children and becomes the main suspect. Tennisson and her team work the case to find the truth.
Yet again suberb acting and writing make it fascinating viewing.
Aa ever a superb storyline with lots of twists and turns. Helen Mirren is unsurpassed as DCI Tennyson, aid ed and abetted by an excellent supporting cast.
