Product Description

As Vera Reynolds, drag queen and night club star, sways onstage singing 'Falling in Love Again', a sixteen-year-old rent boy lies in the older man's apartment, engulfed in flames.
Detective Chief Inspector Jane Tennison has moved up the ranks, fighting every step of the way to break through Scotland Yard's glass ceiling. Now, on her first day as the head of the Vice Squad, this high-profile case threatens to destroy everything she has worked for.
For when Tennison's investigation reveals an influential public figure as her prime suspect, a man with connections to politicians, judges, and Scotland Yard, she's given a very clear message about the direction some very important people would like her investigation to take. Suddenly, in a case defined by murky details, one fact becomes indisputably clear - that for Tennison, going after the truth will mean risking her happiness, her career . . . and even her life.

5.0 out of 5 stars As always a gripping crime thriller. 14 Jun 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
I particularly liked the experience of reality which is difficult to do with a murder scene. There is nothing to dislike in the story. I would recommend this book to any reader who is a fan of crime and murder stories. I was enthralled from start to finnish and felt disappointed when I had completed it because I did not want it to end.

5.0 out of 5 stars Her's as simple as that. 27 Aug 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Quite simply the best La Plante novel written.
It was written in the early 90's and thus reflects that time, with it's attitudes and 'isms' and is almost shocking in today's more careful days..
Political correctness had definitely not made it's way into policing quite yet. However, the main thrust of the story (detailed elsewhere) is a sadly incredibly relevant one today.
It is a non stop book and requires attention as the character list and locations are many and possibly reflects the reality of an investigation with numerous strands leading in all directions. In fact I read the first six chapters, left it a couple of days and felt that I needed to restart the book as I found I'd forgotten the placing of some of the many fact I read it through in one go.

There are many reviews saying that the ending is flat and abrupt and it spoils the read. Yes, if you want a nice tidy ending for everything then you might be disappointed but to me having watched reruns of 'The Vice' and becoming accustomed to the open ended none 'result' of certain vice crimes this book has a more realistic ending to certain aspects of this story and that is fair.
Please read the prologue from La Plante as to why she didn't continue writing the Prime Suspect novels and I do wonder which came first, the idea of casting Helen Mirren as a ranking policewoman and writing Tennison for her, or the other way round.
This is a brilliant but very sobering and saddening read.

For me she never quite reached this standard of writing again and lowers my opinion of the 'Above Suspicion' series of books even further. But this is great .

5.0 out of 5 stars Plumbing the depths of human wickedness 21 Feb 2014
By BobH
Lynda La Plante’s ‘Prime Suspect 3 Silent Victims’ is the third of the series and POSSIBLY the best. The plot is simple and yet complex; a young boy’s death leads to the exposure of a paedophile ring but investigation is hampered by conspiracy within the police. Sounds simple but the reader gets a web which draws tighter and tighter Some of the old names appear, even though DCI Jane Tennison has been transferred to VICE. The most notable reappearance is that of Sgt. Otley, no longer the whingeing flag-waver of times past (PS 1) but showing his skills as a copper despite resenting being shut out from due recognition and enjoying the chaos of colleagues floundering in a quagmire. If only he and Jane Tennison would work as PARTNERS how successful they could be!
It’s a nasty tale which gets nastier as it sinks into the world of corruption, betrayal and intimidation which makes up paedophilia; the feeble attempts of the young victims to ‘tough it out’ make them appear even more fragile. It’s the first time that the reader has really visited the world of the upper echelons of the Met. And what a murky existence it is with ambitious individuals anxious to clamber over the mistakes of colleagues and very much depending on ‘you scratch my back and I’ll scratch yours’. Often writers decry the police for closing ranks vs. the public: here they close ranks against each other.
In ‘Prime Suspect 1’ it was a question of the killer’s known but how do the police prove it; in ‘Prime Suspect 2’ it was what crime’s been committed (victim? / motive?) and how can it be tackled; here it’s whodunit and how is justice to be secured?
On the plus side of this book is that Jane Tennison no longer really being burdened by angst re’ her love-life. She more-or-less writes off the idea of finding ‘Mr. Right’.

3.0 out of 5 stars no happy ending 9 Jan 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
From the start of the book it was a story of todays problems with children being abused, but i was hoping as this was a book there might have been a better potrayal of how this police woman would have dealt with the the problem and not been like all people to day only thinking of thier promotion

3.0 out of 5 stars Prime Suspect 3 8 Jan 2014
By Kim
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
A little disappointed with this book to be honest. Expected a better ending! I felt like the writing was all over the place and not very consistent. It kept jumping from character to character and it was confusing the story for me. Overall I hoped it would be better but it wasn't. Such a shame.
