It has been a source of frustration that one of the best live acts around haven't released much in the way of live material. Over the years fans have had to mainly make do with bootleg recordings.
Riot City Blues Tour is Primal Screams first live DVD. It was recorded in 2006 at London's Hammersmith Apollo. The show lasts for nearly 90 minutes and features a setlist of eighteen songs. The sound and picture quality is top notch - though the rapid cutting between different cameras can be annoying at times. The band is on form, appearing tight, well rehearsed and sober.
The second half of the show is way better than the first. For me the highlight is Damaged. Other stand out moments are Swastika Eyes, Loaded and Kick Out The Jams.
The DVD extras are a short but interesting backstage interview with Bobby Gillespie and Mani, and 13 promo videos. Some of the videos look a bit cheap and nasty, but it is better to have them than not. Like most things Primal Scream have released in recent years - the packaging is nothing to write home about.
This show doesn't have the same high-energy vibe as the Live In Japan CD, nor does it have the entertainment value of their Glastonbury 05 performance. However, fans won't be disappointed. And those who are new to Primal Scream will find this a good introduction to one of the best UK bands of the last 25 years.
