Primadonna by Marina & the Diamonds is one of the best pop songs of all time. It is unique in that it captures the artist's personality very vividly; ironic & humorous.. yet dramatic and at the same time playful. Marina's vocals are unique in that she truly plays a character with her voice. She doesn't just sing "pretty", she tells a story using different tones and growls mixed in with intriguing lyrics that make you laugh, make you think, make you dance.
The beat to this song is crazy. The heavy industrial grind of the verses backed with whip sounds ending each verse lyric.. followed then by the twinkly harp & acoustic-led chorus keeps you looking forward back & forth from verse to chorus. The almost sarcastically injected cheerleader "ooh, yeah, wow!"s are hilarious when they decipher their way through the lyrics "I'm sad to the core, core, core; every day is a chore chore chore".
Primadonna has made Marina & the Diamonds right below superstar status at the time of this review, May 2013. Hopefully within a year she will get what she deserves as a fantastic, ground-breaking new artist that isn't afraid to push the boundaries in musical terms.
