Product Description

United Kingdom released, PAL/Region 2 DVD: LANGUAGES: English ( Dolby Digital 2.0 ), SPECIAL FEATURES: Cast/Crew Interview(s), Featurette, Interactive Menu, Making Of, Photo Gallery, Scene Access, Trailer(s), Uncut, SYNOPSIS: The later years of the life of author D.H. Lawrence are dramatized in this screen biography. Following the controversial reception of his novel The Rainbow, David Herbert Lawrence (Ian McKellen) and his wife Frieda (Janet Suzman) leave England for the U.S., where they hope that Lawrence's bold themes will be received in a more tolerant climate. Such is not the case, and the Lawrences travel first to Mexico, and then to Italy while David attempts to complete and then publish his best known (and most controversial) work, Lady Chatterley's Lover. However, as the furor over the book taxes David's well being, tuberculosis saps his physical health. The supporting cast includes John Gielgud as censorship crusader Herbert G. Muskett and Ava Gardner as Mabel Dodge Luhan.

4.0 out of 5 stars D.H.Lawrence never looked better, 30 Oct 2002

Although over 20 years old this DVD shows what can be achieved with a little love care and attention. A great print of a quality film and a whole host of superb extras. 2 Trailers, a special features section that includes a terrific interview with Sir Ian McKellen, an interview from the 80's with Christopher Miles, paintings from the film, scored photo gallery, excellent biographies of cast and director, a 'Making Of' called The Way We Got It Together narrated by Penelope Keith, deleted scenes with directors comments, out takes, and a nice colour booklet. This package made for hours of fun and then there is the hidden 'Easter Egg' that comes up once you access all the special features. I learned lots about D.H.Lawrence and really think this is top quality stuff.

Although this film is over 20years old the DVD is testament to what can be achieved with a little care and attention. A whole host of great extras - New interview with Sir Ian McKellen, Interview with the director Christopher Miles, Out takes (hilarious shot of Ava Gardner swearing, excellent biographies, a Making of the feature titles The Way we Got it Together - with a narration and interview with Penelope Keith, paintings from the film, scored photo gallery, deleted scenes with director commentary as to why they were omitted and a hidden DVD extra that appears once you access all the special features. These extras added to two trailers and a nice print of the feature make this a great DVD. I learned tons about D.H.Lawrence and felt the subject was really a labour of love for all concerned. Fabulous.

A thoroughly researched, lovingly crafted DVD. A lovely film (great performances from all the cast) and a huge amount of extras (behind the scenes feature, paintings by D H Lawrence, interviews with McKellen and the director, nice booklet, outakes, deleted scenes, photo gallery and more. A terrific DVD, if only more films were given this sort of care. Highly recommended.
