Review

'Arielle Eckstut brings her ready imagination to conjuring the sex scenes that Austen was not able to provide; she can write as if this were homage rather than desecration.' Guardian

Product Description

In 2002, an amateur Jane Austen scholar, while staying at a Hertfordshire estate, stumbled upon a hidden cache of manuscript pages and made an extraordinary literary discovery - lost scenes from Jane Austen's novels that reveal an altogether different dimension to her oeuvre. Pride and Prejudice's Bingley sisters appear as Sapphic seductresses; Mansfield Park's incest subtext becomes manifest; and Darcy gets more than his shirt wet. This incisive parody of academic study is sure to astonish and delight mischievous Austenites.

As I read the first few pages the book seemed to be an authentic and intriguing view of how Jane Austen had been influenced by the straight-laced nature of her times.
It was only as I read the sex scenes themselves that it became clear that this was a spoof.
Cleverly written, it does in its own way add to Austen, satirically answering those who claim her work is boring.
A good novelty book.

Ok for a laugh! 15 April 2011
Format:Paperback
I bought this for my daughter for Christmas as a joke as she loves Pride and Prejudice.

She thought it was hilarious! So I think it went down well!
Not sure about the literary content!

The combination of nearly faultless Austen-style writing with decidedly risqué subject matter is a delight. The eroticism is for the most part restrained rather than overt, and the witty placement (I nearly said 'insertions') of the spoof passages in Austen's original text is very cleverly done. Altogether a delightful adult read: I bought it as a Valentine present for my spouse, and we enjoyed reading it to each other in bed. (Some reviewers on this page seem unable to spot satire from an inch away.)

Just silly
I'm not a religious fanatic about Austen, as some reviewers seem to be, so it doesn't upset me that the canon has been tampered with. Read more

Not for a respecter of Austen ...
This trash may be amusing for anyone prepared to mock the work of J.A. and similar authors, but I can't help feeling that it's primary purpose is simply to shock Austen fans, and... Read more

Don't even think about it
It's great pretext but really it's utter crap. It's supposed to be tongue-in-cheek and it is certainly written in the style of Jane Austen, but the so-called sex scenes are... Read more

Close to being truely dreadful
I'm sorry to say that this book was, like so many books which build on Austen's masterpieces, a real disappointment. Read more

The sex is already in Jane Austen... but perhaps this book will work for people who can't read the allusions or don't have much imagination. Read more

Please don't waste your money!!!
This is a truly dreadful book, tasteless, a complete waste of time and money, and an insult to Jane Austen. I find it difficult to believe that anyone thought it worth publishing. Read more

I have to admit I don't buy the claim that these pieces were actually written by Jane Austin, but they are great fun all the same! Read more
