These 3-disc box-sets can be a cheap way to stock up on some great films if you pick the right combination, and this mix is not at all bad.
Pride and Prejudice is by far the weakest link in this collection; it looks pretty, and rolls along quite enjoyably but it is nowhere near as good as the BBC series
Pride And Prejudice - Special Edition [DVD] [1995. Not only is this film necessarily shorter, but it also loses alot of the humour by trying for a more modern 'realism' - Mrs Bennet and Mr Collins in particular lose out to this approach. Keira Knightley is fairly good as Elizabeth but Matthew Macfadyen (who is absolutely perfect in
Little Dorrit [DVD] [2008]) is badly cast as Darcy, he looks too sad and thoughtful as opposed to proud and arrogant. 3 1/2 stars
It's not often a film is better than the book on which it is based, especially when that book is another Jane Austen classic, but that is the case with the second film in this box-set. When I read Sense & Sensibility I found it a little disappointing. The romances of the two Dashwood sisters seemed rather 'slight', and Marianne's marriage in particular seemed almost an afterthought, added in to tidy up loose ends. The screenplay, written by Emma Thompson who also plays the older sister, manages to make this a moving, romantic and very funny film; the best film-length adaptation of an Austen book by a long way. Definitely 5 stars
Shakespeare in Love is another brilliant film, but very different. Forget the title, this is not a romantic love story, but a hectic, zany comedy with lots of Shakespearean references thrown in for good measure. Shakespeare (Joseph Fiennes) suffers writer's block as he tries to complete his latest play 'Romeo and Ethel the Pirate's Daughter'. As he falls in love with Viola (Gwyneth Paltrow - who in true Shakespearean fashion disguises herself rather unconvincingly as a boy) the play evolves into Romeo and Juliet. There is a wonderful cast, too many to mention, and the break-neck pace as Shakespeare always appears to be in a panic makes this film great fun to watch. I'm subtracting a star because there are some bedroom scenes which bump it up to a 15s rating and make it unsuitable for family viewing. I could go on a rant about this tendency of film-makers to add unnecessary nudity/swearing etc to films that otherwise are great family entertainment, but now means we cannot watch them until all the little ones and grannies are safely tucked away - but I don't suppose anyone is listening. 4 stars
