5.0 out of 5 stars I COULDN'T PUT THE BOOK DOWN 1 Sep 2001
Format:Paperback
It was one of those books I could tell from the first Sentence I knew I was going to enjoy. Polly Father was very ill and in the end was taken into Hospital at the begining of the book, and I thought he was going to die, the Story is about how Sadie's Mum Ada got several jobs just to keep Sadie and her Brother Joey with her, and how the rent man really saved the day. Sadie was a very bright Girl and was sort of put into Service, she worked for the family in the Morning and in the Afternoon joined the Children of the House for Lessons. She worked as a Flower Seller in the Market and made many Friends who come right through to the end of the book with her. It had a happy but sad ending and I throughly enjoyed the book.

Joan Jonker is the best writer of good old fashioned story telling. There is no filthy language to contend with and no explicit sex. This may sound boring to some but believe me I defy anyone to read her book and not feel warm inside. This book does this to you.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must Read 14 Jan 2005
Format:Paperback
I really enjoyed this book from beginning to end. I hate to sound like the other reviews but I couldnt put the book down. I found that I felt I knew exactly how every character felt and was drawn into their lives. I did find I was slightly disppointed with the ending as I expected a little more. It felt a bit of a let down, compared to the exciting story telling in the rest of the book.
