MY PRIDE AND JOY, 4 Nov 2007
This review is from: My Pride and Joy (G K Hall Large Print Book Series) (Hardcover)
This book was first published in 1986, has 507 pages, 22 colour pictures and 2 maps. GEORGE ADAMSON (Baba ya Simba - Father of Lions) was born on 3.2.1906 in Dholpur, Rajasthan, INDIA. He first visited KENYA in 1924. He took various jobs, gold prospecter, goat trader, and professional safari hunter. He joined the Game Department in 1938. George Adamson's second book, starts with lions, stating that he cannot bear the thought of lions behind bars. About man, he is not sure, saying that ' he has killed ten of my lions and murdered my wife '. Nearly everyone in his camp is bitten by lions and put in hospital.
George marries Joy in 1942, but they seaprate in 1970. She was a fantastic painter and painted 20 Kenyan tribes, as in her book ' peoples of Kenya '. She also writes ' Born Free ' which becomes a phenomenon and later is converted into a very sucessful movie. However, poor george gets not much money from the royalties. George then cares for many lions and their cubs and moves from meru to kora. Joy moves to Lake Naivasha, and buys Elsamere. Bill Travers and Virginnia McKenna help George and so do many others. Joy threatens George with divorce.
Tony Fitzjohn then joins George and helps him with his lions and then Leopards. Joy moves with her leopard to Shaba. On 3.1.1980, Joy is stabbed by her servant Paul Ekai. Later Terence, george's brother dies.
After Kora is made a national reserve, George is asked to leave and Tony moves to Mkumazi in northern Tanzania, where he still lives. On 20.8.1989, at the age of 83, George was shot dead at Kora Reserve by somali shiftas. He was burried next to his brother Terence and lion friend 'Boy'.
I enjoyed reading this book, there are many sad bits well written. There are also some colour pictures and maps, showing george and his lions. You may also want to watch his last few years in ' To walk with Lions' DVD. Other books with similar theme are:-
(1) Bwana Game, George Adamson 1968
(2) The Great Safari, Adrian House 1993
(3) Born Free/Living Free/Forever Free, Joy Adamson 1960/61/62
(4) Last of the Free, Gareth Patterson 1994
(5) On Playing With Lions, Virginnia Mckenna 1966
(6) Return to The Wild, Norman Carr 1963
(7) A Lion Called Christian, Bourke and Randall 1971 (2009)
(8) Born Wild, Tony Fitzjohn 2010
Having born in Kenya, I enjoyed reading this book.
Read and ENJOY.

Inspiring tale for animal lovers, 13 April 2010
George Adamson was a game warden in Kenya when he and his wife Joy raised an orphaned lioness whom they named Elsa. The story of Elsa's return to the wild was immortalized in the movie, "Born Free." In his memoir, Adamson recounts his sixty years in Kenya, his life with Joy, and most importantly, his devotion to wild lions. He talks about the filming of the movie and his lifelong friendship and collaboration with the stars.
Adamson, who was called "Baba ya simba" (father of lions), writes lovingly of Christian, the lion who was made famous years later with a YouTube video and he talks about Joy's murder. (He was himself murdered only a few years after the publication of this book.)
This fascinating story of a man who loved animals above all else contains many wonderful photos.
