More About the Author

Thirty-two year old Olivia Darling was born and raised in Cornwall. At the age of eighteen she fell in lust with an Italian art student in St Ives and ran away to Tuscany in hot pursuit of him. The love affair didn't last but Olivia's sojourn in Montepulciano inspired a much more enduring passion for Vino Nobile. She divides her time between Tuscany and London, where she writes her novels of sex, love and luxury.

I much preferred OD's previous novel, 'Vintage' to this one - I felt it was better researched, better written and the plot was cleverer.
Nat Wilde from the UK and US born Carrie are pitched against each other as the managers of rival auction houses in London. Throw into the mix single parent Serena - a fabulously talented forger and her lover - the owner of a plethora of fine art and trusted in the art world and the story is spiced up. A couple of characters from her previous novel are re-introduced and I felt this worked well. Unfortunately, it's all held together rather loosely with basic characterisation and, like I say, mediocre insight into the workings of the art scene.
Unlike 'Vintage' which felt real and was plausable, 'Priceless' is just a good yarn - nothing more, nothing less. I do hope her standards rise again with her next offering...

Before being recommended Priceless, I'd never read Olivia Darling before so a friend lent me her first book Vintage which I devoured in one weekend, champagne, sex and intrigue, what's not to love? Priceless follows in a similar vein except that it's set in the glamorous world of international auction houses, something which I must admit didn't particularly interest me before. Well it certainly does now, if anything it's even more fast paced with ever more liberal doses of scandal and sex, if that was possible.

In a world which seems to be getting greyer by the day, I'm just grateful that there is a writer like Olivia Darling to add some much needed sunshine into our lives but the question is how is she going to follow this one?

Realy really enjoy Olivia's books, both vintage and priceless. If you like Jilly Cooper then this is as close as it gets in my opinion. (please do not read the rubbish Country Pursuits!!) The characters are likeable with twisting yarns and some glamour along the way, set in the art world, (and champagne houses) it has good plotlines, easy reading, and doesnt take long to get into (as some do). No one will be as good as Jilly C but I have to say that Olivia Darling comes close which is high praise indeed.

well written satirical contemporary 28 Oct 2010
By Harriet Klausner - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Mass Market Paperback
At London's Ludbrook auction house, avaricious Nat Wilde and amorally ambitious Lizzy Duffy may have a boss subordinate relationship; in which each uses the other for personal gains. Meanwhile New York based Ehrenpreis auction house sends across the pond their number two art expert, morally ambitious Carrie Klein, to open up the London store.

Meanwhile in Cornwall, artist Serena Macdonald was eking out a meager living for her and her daughter Katie to barely survive as a portraitist paining family pets. When a neighbor dies, Serena meets her late friend's youngest son Julian who knows Nat. Soon a simple mistaken error turns into a lucrative business when Serena displays her talent of being able to paint the works of the Old Masters.

This is a well written satirical contemporary with solid flawed characters. Priceless lacks the credibility of the author's darling Vintage. With nods to the movies Breakfast at Tiffany's and the Art of Love but instead filled with avenging females (rather than Holly Golightly, or Dick van Dyke and James Garner), the story line is fun to read as the audience will wonder just who will be left standing on the streets of London and New York when the scam explodes.

Creative and entertaining 16 Aug 2011

Lizzy, Carrie and Serena all adore their art, but that's where the comparison between these three feisty women ends. Lizzy Duffy works for Ludbrook's, a small London auctioneers and is a talented young woman working her way up through the ranks. She has a thing for her boss Nat Wilde, but is he giving Lizzy the chance to show off her real potential? Carrie Klein works for New York Auction house Ehrenpreis, and jumps at the chance to open their first London office, putting her in direct competition with Ludbrooks. But Carrie is determined to make it a success, whatever the personal cost to herself. And finally Serena is an artist, a very good one in fact, living in Cornwall with her daughter after a messy divorce. But someone is about to get wise to Serena's talent for copying very old and famous paintings, and not necessarily for good...

I am not very knowledgeable when it comes to art or the art world, but that did take anything away from this
book for me. I was wary because of this lack, but Darling does an amazing job covering all of the pertinent details.

The author has continued the format of her previous and debut novel Vintage, choosing to build a story around three different women who do not know each other.

Lizzy was annoying at times because she downplays her talent and is over shadowed by a work relationship, but as of halfway through Lizzy begins to grow. Carrie was my favorite character, I always appreciate a strong and ruthless business women. Serena is an artist, and perhaps the most venerable, but I think her character is what really tied the book together for me. She is forced to make choices we have all made for love.

This is a great read and will have a place of honor on my book shelf. I look forward to watching this author continue to grow.
