Two days before her 40th birthday, Los Angeles rock musician/tattoo artist Jacki (Gina Gershon) is considering throwing in the towel on her dreams of stardom. As front woman for the all-female band Clam Dandy, she gets the band booked into plenty of local clubs, but the big break she keeps hoping for never seems to materialise. To add to her frustration, her band resembles a dysfunctional family: drummer Sally (Shelly Cole), the band's youngest member, is the live-in lover of guitarist Faith (Lori Petty), and bassist Tracy (Drea De Matteo), is an addict whose habits are funded by her wealthy father. Jacki's luck seems to be on the upswing when a record company rep begins coming to the band's shows and she gains a budding romantic interest in Sally's ex-con brother, Animal (Marc Blucas), but she can rest assured that all obstacles are not behind her. Based on Cheri Lovedog's autobiographical rock musical of the same name, PREY FOR ROCK AND ROLL offers an electric, true-to-life portrait of the struggles of a working rock band. Gina Gershon, in a formidably strong and sexy performance, sings all her own vocals in a series of fierce, punky songs also written by Lovedog. Petty, De Matteo, and Cole, who learned their respective instruments for the film, also turn in excellent work in this gritty look at the elusiveness of the rock-and-roll dream.
Don't expect much from this movie and you won't be dissapointed. The performance from Gina Gershon as Jaki was touching but at times it took a lot to keep watching. There is alot about this movie that will seem unnessacary and painful to watch, but, given thought, is really an honest portray of life in a world fueled by wrong decisons, drugs and tragedy. Overall I praise this movie for its honesty and its ability to make you see how even the worst of luck can lead to a happy ending.
I only watched this because of Gina Gershon (having loved her in ‘Showgirls’ – yeah I know, don’t say a word) and had a feeling it wouldn’t be any good just by looking at the cover and by the fact that I’d not heard of it. Well, I was unfortunately right. A female rock singer (Gershon) has been trying for 20 years to make it as a Rock Star, but is still playing small bars and rubbish gigs (and shewill continue to do so with such awful music). The film follows the band through their gigs and their dysfunctional relationships (which take centre stage as the film goes on). To be quite frank, it just isn’t much fun, I didn’t really care about the music (simply because it was poor and Gina is not the best vocalist!), at times the scenes need a bit of editing (i.e.: the rehearsals – I don’t need to see the whole songs performed) and acting is ok. It’s not awful, but it’s worse than ‘OK’. No extras.
i really like this movie its mostly well acted and gina gershon is excellent as jackie the singing isnt great and sounds alot better on cd but well worth watching.
