He looks at violence committed against adults by other children in the home and at school. He presents an overview of the main causes of violence by children. Finally, he offers suggestions for adults on how to get help for their potentially violent children before it is too late. He reveals the warning signs from their earliest to their most urgent stages so that parents can avert violence at every step of the way.

Flannery (Harvard Medical School) warns that the recent modest decline in violent crime statistics should not create complacency about youth violence. He cites "alarming trends" such as that violent offenders are getting younger. The fundamental question is, Why do children of all ages commit violent crimes? Is society or biology responsible? Flannery looks for clues in the community, school, and home and offers comprehensive guidelines for detecting such warning signals as posttraumatic stress disorder, depression, gang membership, and substance abuse. He also gives parents, teachers, and counselors flexible strategies for correction and prevention before problems reach the breaking point.
