Over the years, the Pretenders became a vehicle for guitarist/vocalist Chrissie Hynde's songwriting, yet it was a full-fledged band when it was formed in the late '70s. With their initial records, the group crossed the bridge between punk/new wave and Top 40 pop more than any other band, recording a series of hard, spiky singles that were also melodic and immediately accessible. 5.0 out of 5 stars Much awaited second album doesn't dissapoint. 30 Aug 2001
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
I played the first Pretenders album to death (& still do!), so when Pretenders II was eventually released I was half expecting an anticlimax. I was happily proved wrong, though not as raw as the original, this album has it's own unique qualities. The tracks are varied and interesting. There are beautiful ballads, "English Rose, Birds of Paradise" (both should have been singles in their own right), blues, "Waste not want not" and classy rock, "Day after Day, Jealous Dogs, Talk of the Town". Don't just take my word, you will find four singles in this album, but they are all equally good in their own right except for one, "Louie Louie", a "filler" track. I f you only ever buy two Pretenders albums, buy this and the first Pretenders release. Enjoy!

Pretenders II was always my favourite album of theirs - their last swansong in my opinion, before the soul of the band was ripped out with the death of Jimmy. Poor Pete had just been fired and met his sad end the following year also. Maybe not as "gutsy" as the first album, but definitely more refined with some beautifully-written songs, from the full on rock of Pack It Up to the excellent and wistful English Roses.

But that's just the original album. Now remastered, and presented in a lovely gatefold sleeve which has all the original photos plus two great shots of Jimmy and Pete - a very nice tribute. Also has a 16-page booklet briefly covering the 1981 tour from which the second disc is composed - yes, a whole 18 songs from a band that was at their peak! If you ever liked the Pretenders then you will love this album.

5.0 out of 5 stars Revisiting a childhood gem now better than ever! 27 Jun 2012
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
On its original release back in 1981 this album was one of the first I bought and hoping to rekindle fond childhood memories prompted my checking out this lavish two disc release. For me this was definitely money worth spent as the songs are still as fresh and dynamically appealing as I remember them all those years ago. The first disc offers up the standard twelve track studio album where naturally the single releases `I Go To Sleep', `Talk of the Town' and `Day After Day' shine brightest. However there are some mighty impressive album tracks that are just as appealing. I love `The English Roses' and the raunchy fast paced rock tempo of `Bad Boys Get Spanked' complete with occasional whip cracks and screams. Praise is indeed due for offering up a second disc presenting fifteen live songs plus three rarities weighing in at an impressive seventy-four minutes. On stage I feel that they really are great and particularly enjoy the guitar solo that concludes `Day After Day'.

Let's talk packaging for a moment and it's a sturdy three panel ridged cardboard container with three sleeves, one each for the discs and the other contains a highly informative sixteen page booklet. Thumb through this and you'll count six pages of sleeve notes about the group during 1981, the album tracks and `a word on the bonus material' which is embellished by rare photos of the band on stage and in America throughout rubbing shoulders with the text. Very pleased to find four pages of song lyrics particularly for `Louie Louie', the enjoyable closing track on the album which I didn't exactly know the words.

5.0 out of 5 stars Still loving this 8 July 2013
By Zamby
Format:Audio CD
My favourite Pretenders album (though I've yet to engage with the third, and wondering why I haven't done so yet). There is a rawness and energy here not found on the first. I prefer the more live feel and in-your-faceness of this collection over the more mainstream sound of songs like Brass in Pocket. Okay so "Bad boys get spanked" is silly, but it's gloriously silly. The sequencing of the songs keeps the momentum going from start to end. No filler. Don't forget the wonderful "I go to sleep..." There's nothing to fault here for me - I enjoyed it when it first came out, and still love it now.

(After this, it's the Isle of View album I keep coming back to.)
