5.0 out of 5 stars Lawyers on trial, 7 Oct 2007
By M. A. Ramos (Florida USA) - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
Rusty Sabich is chief deputy prosecutor for Kindle County, his boss Raymond Horgan is up for re-election, and his associate Carolyn Polhemus has been brutally raped and murdered in her apartment. The upcoming election will determine if Rusty will have a job. And we learn that Rusty had an affair with Carolyn which she ended several months earlier.

Rusty is handling the investigation of the murder despite the conflict of interest that only he is aware of. His friend, Dan Lipramzer is investigating the crime. They first focus on convicted sex offenders that Carolyn helped to prosecute. Then Rusty learns that his boss Horgan had a brief relationship with Carolyn. Meanwhile Rusty's marriage is in a shambles as his wife Barbara knows about his affair. As evidence surfaces that implicates Rusty he is arrested for the killing.

The prosecution is led by Nico Della "Delay" Guardia, who has now defeated Horgan for the position of Prosecuting Attorney, and Tommy Molto. The evidence against Rusty is serious; calls made from his home to hers on the night of the murder, a bar glass with his fingerprints on it, carpet fibers matching those at his house are found at her home, etc. The courtroom drama that ensues takes many turns for and against him. By the end of the book we do discover who the killer. This is a good read.

4.0 out of 5 stars excellent read, 1 May 2003

This review is from: Presumed Innocent (Hardcover)
this was my first Turow, and not my last. The book took a while to get going, but once the courtroom part began, the book went along at a terrific pace, well written as well and some humourous moments. I will be looking for more of Mr Turow's books.

3.0 out of 5 stars The book or the film .., 16 April 2009
Complex 80's USA crime thriller mixing the crime, it's investigation, politics, sexual dalliance and courtroom drama. It reads like a film script very reminiscent of Body Heat or Fatal Attraction. Told in the first person by Attorney Rusty Sabitch and conveys a conspiratorial feel as though you are on the insde track. Just when you are well into the novel it smacks you in the face and your trusty narrator Rusty dramatically becomes the nailed-on suspect!

This second part of the novel is less assured as we progress to the trial itself. The trial is unconvincing with too much coup de theatre. No possible alternative to Sabitch as killer is put forward and the novel becomes a peculiarly restrictive, claustrophobic read.

The weakness is that no-one ever asks who else could have done it before Sabitch is charged and no-one ever asks if there is any other suspect if he is found innocent. Then out of the blue we get a wholly unconvincing denouement.

It's an adult read but a bit too clever for it's own good. (The Americanisms and over use of simile can get wearing).

At the end I am sure Hollywood film producers reached for the phone. Nevertheless it is a page-turner that's worth a read but in a very crowded Courtroom drama genre.
