Amazon.co.uk Review

The Prestige attempts a hat trick by combining a ridiculously good-looking cast, a highly regarded new director, and more than one sleight of hand. Does it pull it off? Sort of. Christian Bale and Hugh Jackman play rival magicians who were once friends before an on-stage tragedy drove a wedge between them. While Bale's Alfred Borden is a more skilled illusionist, Jackman's Rufus Angier is the better showman; much of the film's interesting first half is their attempts to sabotage--and simultaneously, top--each other's tricks. Even with the help of a prop inventor (Michael Caine) and a comely assistant (Scarlett Johansson), Angier can't match Borden's ultimate illusion: The Transporting Man. Angier's obsession with learning Borden's trick leads him to an encounter with an eccentric inventor (David Bowie) in a second half that gets bogged down in plot loops and theatrics.

Director Christopher Nolan, reuniting with his Batman Begins star Bale, demonstrates the same dark touch that hued that film, but some plot elements--without giving anything away--seem out of place with the rest of the movie. It's better to sit back and let the sometimes-clunky turns steer themselves than try to draw back the black curtain. That said, The Prestige still manages to entertain long after the magician has left the stage--a feat in itself. --Ellen A. Kim

5.0 out of 5 stars Are you watching closely?, 9 Sep 2007
By L. Otto (Surrey, England) - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
The Prestige is an incredible film, I really enjoyed it from start to finish on standard tv and I jumped at the chance to grab it on blu-ray.

If you're looking for a blu-ray film to showcase your collection, this is it. Pristine quality throughout; the sharpness and clarity are outstanding. Quality-wise it would be hard to rate this film anything less than 100%. There's very little noise, as the transfer from source was done so well. Colours are saturated evenly, and the atmosphere is incrediblely maintained.

In terms of audio, this film rings a high-note. Audio is deep and clear, and definitely very very high quality.

The special features are good too, with stunning behind-the-scenes photography and cast-and-crew interviews to keep avid fans happy.

Overall, this is definitely one of the top blu-ray titles at the moment, in terms of story and sheer quality this film is very good indeed.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very enjoyable with Christopher Nolan doing his trademark timeshifting storytelling, 27 Nov 2007
By brainleek007 (Manchester, UK) - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)
I bought this with my new PS3 because I really wanted to sample fully the blu-ray hi-def and had wanted to see this film for ages.

I watch it with my girlfriend on a full HD TV and we were both very, very impressed. Picture quality is just awesome and really shows off the new high def gear brilliantly. The sharpness is just awesome and like the other reviewer says noise is very low - I never noticed any during the film at all. Sound is superb too, very immersive even from the TV speakers. Would love to hear this all 5.1'd up!

The film itself is very good. The story is about two magicians who through a tragedy they are both a part of become enemies. The two take it in turns to sabotage each other's stage shows as their tricks become more and more daring and the one-upmanship intensifies.

The centre of the story revolves around Hugh Jackman's "Great D'Anton" trying to figure out his rival Borden's (Christian Bale) "Transported Man" trick. His quest leads him to America (the film is largely set in London around 1900) and several meetings with the mysterious Nikolai Tesla played brilliantly by David Bowie. I love the way the story weaves in real people (Tesla and Thomas Eddison) to lend weight to the story although their contribution is fictional.

Anyway, let's just say the Great D'Anton is left a little non-plussed with his inital meetings with Tesla but soon things take a shocking twist and the Great D'Anton gets a bit more than he bargained for...

The love interest is played ably by Scarlett Johansson. She looks stunning throughout the film but I feel the role didn't really stretch her at all. How can I forget Michael Caine? He plays very likeable and all round decent man "Cutter" who is dragged into the middle of the two magicians' rivalry and who ends up playing a pivotal role.

If you're a fan of Christopher Nolan especially Memento then buy this without delay. The story changes its timeframe a lot and I love how he does this without making the film muddled. Incredible really. And be ready for twists...!

Andy Serkis (Gollum from Lord of the Rings) has a supporting role and I have to say every time I see him I wish I can see more of him - he's such a good actor.

So to sum up a very good film - well told and superbly atmospheric. Would like to give it 4.5 but am shying away from giving 5 stars because I've bumped up too many of my other reviews that were on the border! If this is an early blu-ray purchase to test your system you can't go far wrong!

Abracadabra...

1.0 out of 5 stars Failure on all counts, 27 Jul 2009
By D. Salmon "domski1969" (London) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
A terrible film. A waste of Nolan, who trips himself up on a far simpler story than the excellent Memento. Bale does his trademark one-note scowling, only this time with a Dick Van Dyke accent that would shame Dick Van Dyke. Hugh Jackman tries gamely to look convinced by it all but the whole thing is just both dull and silly.
Only worth seeing for Bowie's unintentionally hilarious cameo.
A real disappointment.
