Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

While artists like Beck and Radiohead see every new album as an opportunity for reinvention from the ground up, Cake has no such hang-ups. From the uniformly rustic cover art, the jerky rhythms and wobbly trumpet solos, each of Sacramento band's albums is reassuringly interchangeable. But on its fifth, the group's most distinguishing characteristic--John McCrea's deadpan, detached vocals--seems to have been given a makeover. On songs such as "No Phone" and "Tougher Than It Is" for the first time the singer seems, well, like he's actually trying to sing. It's nothing dramatic--the music will still sound immediately familiar to those who even in passing have heard hits such as "Short Skirt/Long Jacket" and "The Distance"--but with certain bands a little goes a long way. --Aidin Vaziri

I'm always wary of a new Cake album, afraid that they may not be able to live up to the legacy of their previous outings. But once again I am relieved and amazed, as somehow they've done it again!
I have no idea how John McCrea and the rest of the band are able to come up with wonderful, quirky and though-provoking songs time and again, but thank God they do! Pressure Chief comes as such a welcome relief in a musical climate so dominated by banality and mediocrity. It would be foolish to try and single out any one song as being the albums high point (that has always been one of Cake's strong points- the fact that all their songs are at least damn good, and most are frequently brilliant), but rest assured the quality of songs on the album is uniformly great. 'Wheels', 'End Of The Movie', 'Take It All Away'... Any of them. All of them. Just beautiful, beautiful music.
And just as strong as the writing, the musicianship is again exemplery. It's so refreshing to hear musicians that actually play instruments, and obviously care deeply about their art.
Very glad to see them back, doing what they do better than anyone else around. Long live Cake, as we need them now more than ever!

The fifth album from one of my top 5 bands ever. Cake are a band that never fail to deliver you something new, interesting and absolutely amazing. And even after four albums this still seems to be true.

I wasn't absolutely sure it was possible for them to do it again. Make another album where every single track is as great as the one before. An album where each and every song either gets into your heart or your head - and always gets you nodding along or tapping your foot.

Cake were always the hardest band to make a 'Best of' compilation of for my friends, because you just want to put every track on it when you try. And it just got even harder.

Cake fans, non-cake fans, anyone at all - BUY THIS CD. You will not be dissapointed.

At no point can you see any signs of a dip in Cake's music. Their sound continues to be ever more creative and original, and yet always recognisable as the sacramento band. If forced to compare this to any of cake's other works, it must be said that whilst this album pushes the band forward with new flavour, it is reminiscent of many of the tracks from 'fashion nugget' and 'motorcade of generosity' in terms of the energy produced in many of the songs. However, it goes without sayng that cake by no means are simply repeating past greats. John Mcrea evidently pushes his voice forward to add depth to 'waiting' and 'no phone', whilst 'carbon monoxide' and 'the guitar man' show the bands now characteristic intelligent song writing. There is not a single song on this album that isn't entertaining and moving. To ignore cake's work would be a great loss to anybody who enjoys good music.
