Incredible... phenomenal... extraordinary... is there a single word? 29 Nov 2012
By Zub - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Vinyl
The superlatives for this otherwise seemingly mainstream typical 12-track lp from the '60's have yet to be created. So, why only a four-star rating? That comes later... but as far as the content here is concerned, you would be hard-pressed... nay, near impossibly hard-pressed, to find an album with the perfection of the genre found here.

After perfecting his craft and his trademark "wall-of-sound" with artists such as the Crystals, Phil Spector, in concert with his songwriting cohorts including the duos of Jeff Barry and Ellie Greenwich, Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil, and Vini Poncia and Peter Andreoli (a/k/a Anders), raised the bar ever higher with his work with the Ronettes. After the monumental success of "Be My Baby", the Ronettes scored with four more charting singles, including the mesmerizing "Walking in the Rain", a song that should have put the Ronettes back into the top-ten. As rich as this album is with the singles that charted, it contains some tracks that, in this reviewers opinion, could have been singles in their own right, and almost certainly even more commercially successful than some that were actually issued. Barry and Greenwich's "I Wonder" has all the energy and dynamism that could have launched it well into the top-forty, no doubt. And Ronnie's sultry reading of Mann and Weil's "You Baby" had all the makings of a big seller on its own. And as far as the rest of the tracks included here, there is no filler. This single album contains more solid performances and production than the entire lp catalogs of the vast majority of pop artists that have come and gone.

So why then, only four stars? This reissue is in... mono... again. In spite of Spector's obsession with mono for his wall of sound, that two-dimensional wall becomes an entire room when done in stereo. If you ever heard this Ronettes album in the original Philles-label stereo, it absolutely blows you away. I possess that incredibly rare lp - an album that impressed me to such a degree that, to this day, I remember examining it the night I bought it in the record department of E.J. Korvettes in Woodbridge, NJ in 1964. And no one, absolutely no one, can tell me the mono version is superior. But for the mono purists, here it is in all its mono glory, but Sundazed should have offered the stereo version as well. I'm not talking about the poor stereo separation and noisy version found on an imported CD but the wide-channel, furniture-rearranging, floor-shaking original stereo mix of the Philles lp.

If there were ten stars available to rate this album, I would give nine. In stereo, at least 99. But until that ever-elusive stereo master shows up, if ever, this remains one album that deserves a special place in any collector's library of '60's pop music.

Hands down! 11 Sep 2012

This is simply the best album of all the girl groups. When you hear the name The Ronettes, most music lovers can think of four great songs by these girls. What they don't know is they all come from their first release. The remaining tracks are not just fillers, but great tracks as well. Every vinyl lover or music lover at most should have this in their collection.

An ‘Alternative Top 40’ selection* 16 Jan 2014
By Thomas D. Ryan - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Vinyl
*This record is #4 in a select chronological list of 500 albums that never made the top 40 album charts (released 1964-present), yet considered among the best and/or most important albums ever released. “An Alternative Top 40” is a work in progress, to be published in 2017.
What??? This record topped out at # 96? What sort of alternate universe/ twisted history of the world have I been living in? I simply cannot believe that this wasn’t a huge hit album. Nor can I believe that it became so rare that finding an actual copy could have set you back a mortgage payment, until a recent re-release. This is Phil Spector at the top of his game. He ruled (or at least thought he ruled) the music industry around this time, but still in all, even the singles’ chart positions weren’t particularly impressive. Only one song made the top 10 (“Be My Baby”), and none of the others even scratched the top 20. How is that possible? Right here in the ‘grooves’ of these songs is the apex of the girl group sound, with some of the lushest and most influential music ever made.
The girl group sound didn’t begin with the Ronettes, but this is where the genre reached its artistic apex. Teen romance never got any sexier than this. It should have been one of Billboard’s most successful chart toppers, but not in this world.

The Ronettes were pop goddesses dressed as Catholic schoolgirls gone to hell and back, with Ronnie Bennett belting out hits like "Be My Baby" over future husband Phil Spector's Wall Of Sound
