Description

Reed virtuoso James Carter turns in one of his most focused, accomplished albums with 2008's PRESENT TENSE. Although Carter is well known for his eclecticism and willingness to range left of center (he is as comfortable blowing free as in more straitlaced jazz contexts), PRESENT TENSE finds him working in an idiom that recalls the golden era of 1960s post-bop. Carter lets his dexterity soar on bass clarinet, flute, and soprano, tenor, and baritone sax, while yielding plenty of space to a crack line-up that includes drummer Victor Lewis, pianist D.D. Jackson, and trumpeter Dwight Adams, among others. This mixture of swing, bop, Latin, and ballads, along with its moments of experimentation, makes PRESENT TENSE an accessible, artfully crafted effort.

Ever bought an album where the next track is pretty much the same as the last ? Well this album couldn't be more different.Ten tracks with five different reed instruments (soprano,tenor & baritone saxes,bass clarinet & flute)and every style within the jazz idiom you can think of then you'll get where this album is coming from.He bolts out of the stables with "Rapid Shave" an uptempo Baritone burner,"Bro Dolphy" is his nod to Eric Dolphy the master of the bass clarinet,"Pour Que..." is a nice gentle Brazilian piece with some lush warm tenor from Carter,"Sussa Nita" is a French influenced ballad with some achingingly beautifull Sidney Bichet like phrasing on soprano,"Song of Delilah" after a meditative intro breaks into a funk where carter and trumpeter Dwight Adams overlap melodies and exchange improvised phrases with each other,"Dodo's Bounce" is the only flute track of the album and is a nice bouncy medium tempo piece,"Shadowy Sands" has a deserty middle eastern feel which suits James's bass clarinet work here,"Hymn of the Orient" is another uptempo piece for the Baritone,"Bossa JC" is exactly what it says with some more warm tenor heard here and the closing track "tenderly" is a slightly disappointing tepid ballad which would have sounded better on soprano than the choice of tenor used on this one.
All in all this is a great album incorporating the many different facets of James Carters arsenal and shows just how talented and versatile a muician this man really is.
If you find a more varied album than this one i'd like to hear from you !
Buy it - you really can't go wrong.
