The stories in this collection are gems to any reader who loves the genre of Lovecraft,Poe,James,Hodgson etc.
Concise, beautifully written and evocative of a time in American history long gone, the stories have an ethereal, chilling quality which haunt the reader for all time. Collect and keep.

.
This book was great. Some of the tales certainly sent a real shiver down my yellow jelly spine and had me on a couple of occasions checking the bedroom door wasn't opening behind me risking me dropping my trusty Kindle (not really....but you get the idea).

So what do you get. A selection of short possibly factual (?!) ghost stories. Some are of just a few pages, some a little bit longer. If you are like me you will be a bit disappointed to finish the book simply because they are really really good. Each tale is atmospheric and old, and I found it easy the way the author writes (in almost old newspaper Court reporter style) to put myself right there in the story. That might sound weird but some who buy this book and read the stories might just see what I mean by that.

I think this is a book to read and keep, and re read again in the not too distant future. In the right atmosphere with the right company you could scare each other reading them out. These are the kind of night-time tales that make you think. A few of these chillers will stay with you.
Do not for example after a few beers volunteer to run to Coventry and back. If you like ghost stories/tales of the unexpected you have got nothing to loose whatsoever by having a read of yet another hidden gem.

I have discovered via the new Kindle download facility that comes up at the end of the book more Ambrose Bierce stories and since downloaded "Can-Such-Things-Be" onto my Kindle, although I haven't read that one yet.

Though this edition does not allow you to select an item from the table of contents and go right to it, Kindle standard apps mean that does not detract much from this splendid collection of Bierce's work. The contents are: the anthology The Ways of Ghosts, including Present At a Hanging, A Cold Greeting, A Wireless Message, An Arrest; the anthology Soldier-Folk, comprising A Man With Two Lives, Three and One Are One, A Baffled Ambuscade and Two Military Executions; and Some Haunted Houses, comprising The Isle of Pines, A Fruitless Assignment, A Vine On a House, At Old Man Eckert's, The Spook House, The OTher Lodgers, The Thing At Nolan, The Difficulty of Crossing a Field, An Unfinished Race, Charles Ashmore's Trail and Science To the Front. I was a bit disappointed that An Occurence At Owl Creek Bridge and The Moonlit Road were not included, but as these have been extensively anthologised I don't miss them much. A really good acquisition for the fan of ghost tales and American literature alike.
