An absolutely essential reference book for the home., 13 Oct 2000

This book is fabulous. Dr Mindell goes far beyond simply telling you what natural alternatives exist to prescription drugs. He explains the drugs themselves, how diet can effect them, what the side effects might be and then he goes on to explain the natural alternatives. Yet this book is not an 'all natural is good' book. Dr Mindell is thorough in explaining when an alternative is a good idea and when it isn't, how and when to take it, how long to take it for AND he explains why these alternatives work. As a researcher into health and food issues I expected to learn very little - I was wrong. Just one of the many things I learnt is that aspirin can effect sleep because it reduces the level of melatonin (essential for sleep) in the body. Did you know that? The book is divided into two parts. The first, and shorter, part is called 'Laying the Foundation for Good Health'. The second part, 'Prescription Drugs and their Natural Alternatives' forms the main body of the book and covers heart disease, the digestive tract, colds, coughs, asthma and allergy; pain relief, antibiotics and antifungals; insomnia, anxiety and depression; diabetes, eye disease, prostrate problems, hormones, osteoporosis, herpes, and impotence. If you or someone in your family is taking drugs (prescribed and bought over the counter) you need this book. It is a truly valuable resource.
