Well worth the couple of pounds I spent on it. Covers all the basic, intermediate and most, if not all of the advanced principles of disaster preparedness. The book mentions meany things I hadn't thought of and reminded me of things I had forgotten. If I had to find a fault the book it (trying really hard to find fault) would be that the emergency medical charter, but don't let that stop you from reading it as it only needs a little up dating and is still good the other 49 chapters are excellent. Well done Mr Bradley.

Broad Overview with Real Depth 5 July 2013
By J. Robideau - Published on
Format: Kindle Edition Verified Purchase
There are quite a few manuals, handbooks, or general overview types of materials when it comes to prepping and survival topics, but this book stands out from the pack because it manages to go both broad and deeper than most.

I read this book on my kindle, but the print version comes in at 270 pages long, so this is no short and sweet pamphlet. What impressed me the most about this book is the amount of practical and helpful information found in each section of this book. While the sections aren't exceptionally long, the author manages to get the most important and basic information into each section so that the reader both understands the need and reasoning for that step and has some direction and specific actions that he or she can take immediately.

From Faraday cages to hardening your home and radiation safeguards to prepping your pets, this book surprised me with it's depth!

The "steps" are in alphabetical order rather than in any practical order of importance. It seems slightly amusing that becoming a ham is 30 "steps" before putting your financial house in order. Feel free to pick and choose the steps you read first.

Thankfully, the book is well formatted for the kindle with the ability to quickly switch between chapters/steps and access the linked Table of Contents. This is essential in a reference book, especially on that is organized alphabetically rather than for flow.

This book is highly recommended for:
- Beginner preppers who want an overview before they start
- Anyone looking for a poignant overview of a number of areas of prepping
- Intermediate and Advanced Preppers who want to fill out their prepping library

If you enjoy reading about survival and prepping, I also recommend Ultralight Survival: Make a Small and Light Bug Out Bag That Could Save Your Life for specific advice on creating the lightest and most efficient bug-out-bag possible.

If you enjoy reading about personal security and tactics, I also recommend Tactical Bible Stories: Personal Security Tips from the Bible for advice specifically for keeping you and your family safe in dangerous times.

The BEST "Start to Prep" book out there! 14 Aug. 2012
By HDR Man - Published on
Format: Paperback
The "Prepper's Instruction Manual: 50 Steps to Prepare for any Disaster" by Dr. Arthur Bradley is a top notch, easy-to-read, easy-to-understand book on being prepared. This book is inexpensive, yet covers a vast amount of information related to general preparedness. This book could be called something like a "Prepping for Dummies" book, but that doesn't give enough credit to this book. Even though it is an introductory/intermediate level prepping book, it goes way beyond THE BASICS of beans, bandaids, etc.. This book is broken into 50 steps that will get on the road to preparedness. What I really love about this book is that the author covers so many things that are more than just the essentials... things you havn't even thought of yet to even ask! Dr. Bradley knows you will eventually ask and so he answers questions, gives tips and tricks, links and more to really help you get ready for just about any situation. The wide amount of topics he covers from radios, to first aid, EMPs, to CERT training, and so much more is vast and deep considering it is only a small 252-page paperback book. (physically small is size as well so it will transport easily also).

I cannot recommend this book enough! My only minor complaint... would be nice if there was some sort of index in the back so you could more easily find a certain tool or technique fast again, but that is a very minor point.

Dr. Bradley's newest book basically condenses down the information in his popular "Handbook to Practical Disaster Preparedness for the Family" into fifty steps to getting better prepared. If you liked his handbook, you'll love this "how to" guide. Not all of the steps will apply to everyone, but they are reasonable actions that people should consider. Actions include properly assessing the threats, stockpiling food (he recommends both a short-term supply of regular food and a larger cache of food with long shelf life), learning the right ways to purify water, what items you should carry every day, what should go in your grab-and-go bag, and much more. Good stuff. Just FYI, you can find the book cheaper at his website

Getting Started 30 July 2012
By zentowin - Published on
Format: Paperback
The Prepper Instruction Manual is a great place to start if you are new to prepping.
It covers all the basic areas that you will need to be aware of. It gets you thinking!
Just starting out can be very overwhelming as how to prepare. I wish this book was around when I started prepping 4 years ago! The only thing I would like to see added to this book is a section designated for a list of resources for people to go to. I'm sure the author has several "go to" areas that he uses. i.e. internet sites for long term storage solutions, Food purchasing wholesale, sites that will guide people to more information. Maybe a resouce link to relate to each chapter in the book?

Because, once you start prepping you will want to know so much more. He mentions some sites throughout the book, but I'd like to see them all brought together in one section, and more of them. For example did you know that there is an American Preppers Network? and a chapter for each state? [...]

Good addition to his other books 12 Aug. 2012
By Amazon Customer - Published on
Format: Paperback
I have read his other book titled "Disaster Preparedness for the Family". I liked that one as well and was most surprised with this new book that he still managed to expand on the information. This is the book one would want to follow the DP for the family book, not really to read beforehand. I like the author's style of writing as he is very realistic not all scare you and prepare for silly stuff that is most unlikely to happen. In all reality, at least if the unforseen or really unlikely did happen a reasonable preparedness plan like the author presents in his writing for most situations would render you in a good position to ride it out and do quite well. I would recommend it for reading to anyone wanting to be a little more prepared for the reality we live in which means what if your electricity goes out...what would you do? Have you really considered what the loss of that one thing effects? This author has considered that and can at least get you to see and prepare for the bigger picture that all these little things we take for granted daily really would affect if they were gone for a few hours or days as they have already in many parts of the U.S. If you read any of the reviews on generators for example on Amazon even you'd find that most people ended up getting them AFTER the storm, so better to be proactive than reactive. This is what the author is trying to do as well.
