The book with a CD-ROM that provides audio and visuals for computer instruction The manual presents eight full-length model TOEFL exams that reflect the current computer-based TOEFL format. The optional compact disc-and-book package provides the audio for Listening Comprehension sections of all tests in the manual. The CD-ROM presents a practice TOEFL exam in a computer adaptive format, which is exactly the way the actual test is given. Although I used this book to prepare for the computer-based test, and not the paper-based test, which the book is written for, it really helped me. I only had like 3 weeks to prepare, but this book really cracked the TOEFL and taught me what to look out for and how to avoid all the pitfalls. I guess I could have done without and still made a respectable score, but WITH it, my score turned out to be more than satisfactory. It turned out to be almoust as high as possible. No doubt this book is really worth its money. Even as a reference book for later use this book is great.

3.0 out of 5 stars It is not the perfect guide 1 Feb 2001
Format:Paperback
First of all this book contains 4 CD's. If you don't have CD driver, you shouldn't buy this book. Moreover you can only listen practice exams questions from CD's.The book doesn't contain computer adaptive toefl test.On the other hand, there are a lot of practice questions.Especially grammar explanations of book's are very broad. You can see many different grammar problem area. Nevertheles, the book is not a perfect guide. If you enter a CBT exam , you have to use interactive CD tool.Unfortunately, this book doesn't give you enough preparation. In summary you can buy this book and you can see many questions, but I believe that it can't be enough for you.I had used this book and also I had recorded good scores before a real CBT exam. But after the exam, I again start to looking for another book.

4.0 out of 5 stars If you can buy *only* one book, this is the one! 29 April 2000
By TestMagic Inc. - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
I am a professional TOEFL prep instructor. Here is my review:
If you can only buy one book, this is the one.
However, I would*not* recommend that you buy only this book--it is not enough. You need to buy at least two other titles as well--the official "TOEFL Kit" and the "PowerPrep TOEFL" software.
First, this book does NOT have a computer test. Instead, it has some questions in the book that simulate the computer questions. Half of the tests are written for people who have to take the paper test, the other half are for people who have to take the computer test.
If you can only buy one book, you need a review of grammar and other sections of the test, and you want some practice tests, this book is your best choice. It has a lot of grammar explanations and lots of practice questions.
So, it is a great value--the price is low, and you get a lot of questions.
However, the book is not perfect. Some of the questions are old, and you will not see those types on the
TOEFL anymore. Furthermore, many of the questions are easier than the real TOEFL, especially the reading sections. Many of my students have said that the reading section is very, very hard and that they were not prepared for the real TOEFL when they took it.
In short, if you can only buy one book, this one is okay, but you really should buy official TOEFL materials so that you will be ready for the real test when you take it.

3.0 out of 5 stars The best value in TOEFL prep books 28 May 2002
By TestMagic Inc. - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
If you can only buy one book, this book is your second best choice after the more expensive Longman book (see my review of it on Amazon). This book has a lot of grammar explanations and lots of practice questions. So, it is a great value--the price is low, and you get a lot of questions.
However, the book is not perfect. The book hasn't been updated in many years, and some question types are outdated. Furthermore, many of the questions are easier than the real TOEFL, especially the reading sections. Also, the CD's that come with this edition are NOT software, they are for listening. And this listening is not of very high quality, it's very amateurish.
In short, if you can only buy one book, this one is okay, but the Longman book is much, much better, AND it includes the hands-down BEST practice TOEFL software on the market.

1.0 out of 5 stars OUTDATED 23 April 2003
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
1)The problems in the book are very outdated. (for grammar section buy Cliff's or Longman)
2)The problems in the book are less difficult than those on a real exam.
3)The problems in the book were arranged in very boring manner.
4)The CD-Rom is only for Listening. (for more computer practice buy Delta's Key for Toefl Test with CD, which has 10 tests or Cambridge Preparation for Toefl Test, which has 7 tests. Both books have CD-Rom simulated CBT.)
5) The Essay section is fair. (for the best essay section buy Cambridge Preparation for the Toefl Test)
Generally, there is no one book for the preparation for the TOEFL. Most likely you will need some combination of them.
For instance,
a) Delta for practice and reading. Moreover, you may wish to buy just Delta CD Rom without book and cassets for practice only;
b)Cliff's or Longman for grammar;
c)Cambridge for essay and for practice.
Good luck!

5.0 out of 5 stars THE BEST BOOK 1 Mar 2002
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio Cassette
I have been teaching ESL for 15 years, and Barron's How to Prepare for the TOEFL test is not only the best book for students planning to take the TOEFL, but also for intermediate level students who need to add structure to their learning of grammar, and develop their vocabulary. A very interesting text to work with.

5.0 out of 5 stars THE NUMBER ONE 4 Mar 1998
By pizana90@hotmail.com - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio Cassette
I've already read the book How to prepare for the new toefl test by Pamela Sharpe, I've not found a better book of toefl preparation until now. at the begining of the book it looks difficult to adapt to the way it is structured but as the days are passing by you notice that the way in which She made the book is the best to have a quick reference while you're answering the excercises of "structure and writen expression", I dont know the author but in my opinion is a person extremely intelligent. The excercises are ordered on a methodic way that I've never seen before in other toefl books that present their teachings so clear. I never before had taken classes of grammar but I feel that the book has help me very much. I've read a 70% of the book and in my opinion is the best.
