Pure Excellence

Caetano Veloso is like wine, the older the better. This album recorded throught his latest show - Prenda Minha - is a confirmation that Caetano is essencial the best in Brazilian comtemporary popular music. His new arrangements and interpretation of old and new songs are superb, and with a great team of musicians, he makes this one of his finest moments in his career. I have been his fan for years and I am delighted to attend his latest show in New York and DC and to listen to the album over and over again. His music is universal, being at the same time the best translation of several forms os brazilian music. His style is innovative and uplifting, with lots of carisma and intensity. For someone who would like to be introduced to his music I strongly recommend this album.

Although Caetano has produced quite a few excellent live albums in the last ten years this one is probably the best (I would also recomend Fina Estampa Ao Vivo). It has been recorded in 1998 in Brazil and available for almost two years now, but this year Caetano presented this same show (with a few changes in the acoustic part of the programme) to some lucky Europeans as well. I had the chance to attend the concert in Udine, Italia, and I (together with the rest of the crowd) enjoyed every second of it. Caetano's voice has never sounded stronger live, he's a born performer and the 12-piece group (including 4 Bahian samba drummers) is amazing. The show was full of wit and passion. The CD brings most of the best moments of the 2-hour show, including the selection of Caetano's solo acoustic performances (like Drao or Saudosismo), powerful reneditions of Terra and Mel, I only miss the wonderful Manhata from Livro. Like all Caetano's live albums this one brings us much more than just live versions of the last studio album (Livro). There are, as always, many surprises, including nods to Jobim, Jorge Ben, Djavan and Gilberto Gil among others, which makes Prenda Minha really a must buy for any true fan of Brazilian music.

I am a great fan of Caetano Veloso, but this CD is not as special as others. If you want to know the true Caetano I would reccomend a compilations of traditional hits or "Tropicalia 2". The recording is not able to reproduce the special intimacy of his typical performance
