5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent overview 4 July 2012
Stan Beckensall has long been the authority on the prehistoric rock art of northern Britain and this book reflects his depth of knowledge and understanding.

This volume is really well-illustrated and provides an excellent overview - he has written many other books on this subject, usually regional guides, but this is a recent addition and covers much new material.

You will find excellent black and white photographs of rare and hard to find sites (good quality black and white photographs provide better detail than colour plates, though there are also some examples of the latter too).

Overall, probably the best book on prehistoric British rock art. Great for the casual reader because the subject is so interesting and the book is profusely illustrated, but equally useful for the student or academic.

Excellent, a 'hard-to-put-down' read.

Stan Beckensall's Prehistoric Rock Art in Britain is an enjoyable read for anyone with an interest in the subject of prehistoric rock art. There are many excellent photographs throughout the book and a narrative that demonstrates his very broad knowledge and experience. The writing style is refreshing compared to many of the books published on this subject by professional archaeologists. Only the referencing could be improved in this excellent book.

3.0 out of 5 stars OK book, not fabulous 3 Mar 2014

This book covers the rock art of Britain as the title implies but the author is highly opinionated and doesn't mind sharing those opinions. Decent coverage of the topic from a rock art recorder's point of view.
