Book Description

25 Sep 2006
Many more women now participate in all types of exercise and during pregnancy often want to continue to work out and keep fit. As a result of pregnancy many women have a lot of questions and concerns about exercises and what is safe for their baby. Even these days, women are often given conflicting advice and are left unsure or confused over exactly what exercise they can or cannot do. Pregnancy and Exercise is written for the expectant mother and will: - answer any questions women might have - educate mums to be about the changes happening to them during pregnancy and how these relate to exercises - take out the guess work to allow pregnant women to make informed decisions - give women the confidence to exercise through their pregnancy, to make them stronger for birth and fit enough to cope with a demanding baby.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for current exercisers 9 Jan 2009
By Ness
I already use a gym so when I became pregnant wanted to carry on doing so safely. This book is excellent, covering many different types of gym equipment and classes, swimming and running, and advising what is suitable for those who are or are not used to exercising. It breaks the advice down into trimesters and is written in a no-nonsense, friendly manner. Also provides good core muscle activities that can be done at home, Kegel exercises and some sensible healthy eating advice. There's a list of unsuitable activities. She also explains why things are or are not recommended. The format is nice too, it's a very user-friendly book. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great advice for active pregnancy 1 Oct 2010
I have used this book from very early on in my pregnancy. I like that it covers different types of sports/exercise classes in detail and gives alternatives to exercises that you should avoid from a certain stage in your pregnancy. It also has a very helpful section on your abdominal muscles and how they change (with drawings) which helps if you want to understand why you have to adapt/change certain exercises. I think the book is ideal for someone like me who has been very active before their pregnancy and who wants to continue as long as possible with a (slightly modified) fitness programme. However, it also has sections for women who are new to exercise and it gives detailed suggestions how to start your pregnancy fitness programme. I especially like the descriptions of exercises that you can do at home (with lots of photos). The bit about how to monitor your 'workout level' to make sure you are not over-exercising is also great.
All in all a fantastic book which I can recommend, definitely worth buying!

5.0 out of 5 stars Good detailed and safe exercise information 6 Feb 2008
Cherry Baker is an excellent and experienced instructor for both the general public and Pilates and Fitness instructor alike, she has also developed one of the most comprehensive Pilates Instructor training courses available. In this book this knowledge and experience shines through, showing expectant mother functional and safe exercises and all to consider when doing them.

I would highly recommend this book as a valuable resource, as a mother who has exercised through two pregnancies and returned to full fitness after two large babies and c-sections. Thank you Cherry

4.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic 25 Oct 2009
Extremely upto date and modern, written in a clear and organised manner and as far as i can tell seems to cover all you would want to know about pregnancy and exercise. splits it up into trimesters and gives you exercises you should and shouldn't do when pregnant havent read it all yet but from the chapters i have read it has been thoroughly research and written by someone who has experience in exercising whilst pregnant and training pregnant women which is reflected well in this book.

Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I have bought this book as I recently discovered I was pregnant and wanted to continue to exercise but needed more information. I am a qualified pilates instructor and wanted a bit more detail on how I should be moderating my activity to remain a safe.

This book provides very detailed anatomical and physiological information on changes occurring during pregnancy. It also provides information on which types of exercise are suitable at different stages of labour, and how to exercise safely throughout.

Although it does contain some information on exercises, if you're not a fitness instructor, you might find some of the exercises difficult to follow/build into a workout plan. A good book for anyone looking for a plan to follow is the 3-plan by Lucie Brand, which provides detailed instruction (but less detailed information on pregnancy itself).

I would recommend buying both books together as they are good complements to each other - this one will provide you with the detailed understanding of the changes occurring in the body, and the other provides easier to follow workout plans.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great 20 May 2013
By Julia
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Daily Mail reading acquaintances: "oooooh are you sure you should be exercising when you are pregnant?"

Me: "read this!".

Super, duper useful for peace of mind about exercise when pregnant (do not listen to Daily Mail reading old bags who still regard pregnancy as a confinement). Lots of great advice about different types of exercise per trimester and heart rate zones. Lots of it, granted, is common sense but it's invaluable for that peace of mind.

I am a fitness instructor too and it is also v useful for advice for participants and clients who are pregnant.
