Les McKeown is Irish and he has clearly kissed the Blarney Stone before writing this book as it is full of entertaining little anecdotes and chatty commentary. It's readable and quite entertaining - the trouble is it seems to be light on anything concrete that you can actually work with. Two-thirds of the 180 page book is a description of the seven stages that the author believes a business can move through. This is interesting and there are some nuggets here - but there is quite a bit of padding too. Mr McKeown's thoughts are similar (though much lighter in tone) than other business books and studies I have read, but you could easily cover the key points in a 20 page summary.

Finally, in the last fifty pages, we get to the "meat" of the book - what it is meant to be all about - how to keep a business in the "Predictable Success" stage. Here Mr McKeown provides an 11 point structure for successful businesses. This is not exactly rocket-science - anyone who has read a lot of business books, from "In Search of Excellence" onwards, will have come across all of the elements in this structure (perhaps with different labels) - but it is interesting and readable, in Mr McKeown's chatty style. His descriptions of these elements of success are pretty broad-brush, and the book does not provide the "precise road map" it claims to, but I don't really think that is the purpose of the book. The book is devised as an easily readable introduction to issues that executives need to factor in to build an effective business. They can then find the detail elsewhere. As a light introduction to these topics the book does its job well.

Personally, I would have liked more detail on the elements of success and less of the nebulous description of the business life-cycle, but that might just be me.

I heard Les McKeown speaking at the DoLectures in 2011 on Predictable Success and also his second book, The Synergist. I loved the way he summed up what he does.

He gives companies and owners clarity within 7 minutes and control within 7 weeks.

How?

Well partly through distilling his experiences of working with innumerable companies and CEOs through business start-ups and beyond. Through these experiences, McKeown identifies seven stages that organisations pass through, from the early struggle to death rattles of the insolvent and liquidated. The seeming nirvana of Predicatable Success is found in the middle, at the apex of this arc.

McKeown suggests that there are identifiable characteristics and experiences shaping each stage of this journey. His narrative and light tone of voice then presents these patterns through engaging anecdotes and case studies.

Personally I find Predictable Success to be helpful in two ways.

1. It speaks to my own emerging business. It provides great comfort in reflecting back experiences and also by forewarning on the dynamics that may lie ahead. McKeown's tone is optimistic and Can-Do. When he talks about business being fun you believe him.

2. As a lens through which to consider and observe other businesses. There is an inevitable draw to hold this lens up against past experiences, to use it when working wit other people and their businesses. Predictable Success presents a framework within which we can try to position our own, or our friends and clients businesses and the challenges that they face.

I recommend Predictable Success to any business owner or leader.

Entrepreneur and CEO Les McKeown prefaces his book with a tale of discovery - the story of how he uncovered the "Predictable Success" model. The personal anecdotes he shares in this section demonstrate his humility, as well as his bona fides. Perhaps more important for a book that aspires to show organizations both what they are (he says that every organization moves through a specific life cycle) and what they can be (every organization can stay in the best phase, called Predictable Success), McKeown trots out a fine writing style. Most chapters present a compelling, detailed anecdote that illustrates his principles, a feature that gives the book a nice utility. Leaders who learn through stories will find this guide as useful as leaders who prefer lean, jargon-free business prose do. And, though the book is somewhat repetitive and it fizzles out in the last chapter, McKeown's points are clear. This author knows companies: how they look on the way up and how they look on the way down. getAbstract recommends his unpredictably fresh perspective on something every business wants more of - Predictable Success.

The title sounded too simple at first - like Success can really be "predicted"? I was skeptical, but then I read the book. Les has the deep, detailed and diverse business building background to know exactly what he is talking about. And from his many businesses and countless consulting gigs, he clearly knows what needs to be done to get to, well, it's true, "Predictable Success".

I run a small business that is growing and inevitably hitting the exact issues that Les outlines in the "Fun" to "Whitewater" stages. Our entire team has read this book, and we are now deep in the application stage, following step by step Les' advice. And it's WORKING. Les' clarity, coaching and specific suggestions for action have given our team a rallying point for focused action. We are not "there" yet, but we know we are on the right track.

If you have a business at any stage in of business growth (or decay), this is the book that will make you say "Woah! How did this guy know that? and That? and THAT!?" Even more important, this is the book that will make you say "Thank goodness. Now I can see exactly what we need to do next."

The only thing after that, of course, is to do it.

Bottom line: an easy read, an eye-opening analysis, and an immediately applicable action plan that works.
