5.0 out of 5 stars Fabulous little book, 24 Jun 2010

This review is from: Precious Inheritance: The Conservation of Welsh Vernacular Buildings (Paperback)
This is an extremely helpful little book as someone who has just purchased a small holding in Wales. It is not a polemic. It simply asserts a truth that some insight into how these buildings were kept water tight in the past can help ensure they remain so now.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent book for anyone living in an old house - not just in Wales, 1 Oct 2007
This review is from: Precious Inheritance: The Conservation of Welsh Vernacular Buildings (Paperback)
Cliff writes with passion and knowledge about the need for particular care, materials and techniques to preserve our traditional buildings, and this book should become the standard 'owner's manual' for anyone living in a traditional stone house.
The book is well-illustrated, clearly written and, above all, extremely practical. If our precious inheritance of vernacular buildings is to be preserved, this book really needs to be read by every builder, householder and local government planner.

5.0 out of 5 stars Home truths, 16 Jan 2008

Christopher J. Wright "Chris Wright" (Pembrokeshire) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Precious Inheritance: The Conservation of Welsh Vernacular Buildings (Paperback)
Nicely presented and very well illustrated, this book gives sound advice on the use of traditional materials. It exposes the cultural vandalism which has been prevalent in Wales towards its built heritage and suggests sensible remedies.

The author quite rightly identifies that the use of modern materials on old buildings is not only damaging the buildings, but also our planet. I wonder how many Welsh Assembly ministers realise that a third of Wales' housing stock is under threat, not just from dodgy builders, but also from their own planning and building control regulations?

If you are living in an old house or thinking of buying one, buy this book first.
