A lot of great bands from the 80's/90's have released fine singles and albums recently (Duran Duran, Tears For Fears, Simple Minds) but none as fine as the new Depeche Mode single. Precious is an instant classic that needs only to be heard once to realise that it might be the best song of the whole year. But it's always been like that with DM, they've always came back with something that blows your mind. And despite the solo projects by Martin Gore and Dave Gahan, DM was actually never away. Martin Gore has this time written a moody, etheral pop tune not very different from Enjoy The Silence, Dream On or Freelove, that builds from a peaceful opening to a somewhat anthemic four minutes without ever going too far. Near perfect lyrics (Precious and fragile things/need special handling)and an interesting mid-section only completes it. And the song really gets a treatment it deserves in the beautiful vocals by Dave Gahan, who seems to be getting better by each album. Can't wait for the new album "Playing The Angel" and next year's tour. Depeche Mode seem to be on a quite a roll...

Martin Gore and Dave Gahan have delivered a real treat, which should find a strong audience outside of the hardcore Mode masses. Written in the aftermath of his divorce, Martin has managed to hit on a glorious rolling melodic line, handled tenderly by Dave. The track simply works effortlessly, like many great Mode singles do. A great blend of pop sensibility and routine Depeche gloom, this single will surely surprise those who only remember the psychotic clang of 20 years ago. Hail the Depeche Mode of 2005; classy and compelling.

This is an awesome new single and absolutely classic DM. Many people will no doubt hail this as a new 'Enjoy the Silence' or claim they have returned to an older style, but actually it is a sound that draws from their entire history. The feel of the song is almost like a retrospective of their entire work.
The Sasha remix is pretty mediocre in comparison to the original version, but then it wouldn't be DM without a remix.
If you are a DM fan you will love this and, as I have done, will pre-order the album immediately!

I love this new song from Depeche Mode, and was pleased to hear what the brilliant Ben Hillier had done for them. This track is true DM through and through. Electronic, dark, brooding, about pain.
Also try tracking down the DJ Dan 4am or 6am remix from iTunes, as these two mixes of Precious are far superior to the Sasha effort.
Here's to seeing them in Birmingham next year!
