a great slice of history for acid house fans.... some tracks are low and a little bit erratic, but newbuild was the same... There are actually some really good tracks that would not be out of place on newbuild. it is quite hard to imagine this stuff was being made in manchester in 1987, true pioneers, if you like this go for the father album newbuild and also the 2 stakker releases on rephlex, acid heaven!! the tik and tok album is really good too...

Most of the tracks on this album were actually produced by A Guy Called Gerald according to the guy himself and not 808 state.

Interviwer: Rephlex recently released Prebuild, an album that compiles some early 808 State tracks. Would you have liked to be involved in the project?
AGCG: I was involved in the project. If you read the small print you will find 70% of the music on the album is mine prior to forming 808 State.
I:What was your reaction when you first heard that Graham Massey was putting this together?
AGCG: Brilliant. It's interesting the way things work. A vast percentage of the tracks were originally from a demo tape I made in 86/87 and gave him. I'd actually lost my original tape so it was really great to hear them again.

it looks like Newbuild, it sounds like Newbuild...

This is the quintessential collector's item. It's old, it's dated, and the tracklist is a bit of a disorganized jumble. For those who don't know, 808 State are a pioneering Manchester acid house collective. Later, in the mid-90s, they began exploring all sorts of other electronic styles and collaborating with many talented vocalists to amazing effect. But this disc has none of that. This was back when they were poor and were using 303s and cheap boxes and scractchy old tapes scrounged out of studio dustbins to make their recordings. This is straight old old old school acid house, cavernous, lo-fi, and full of delightfully dated synthesized squelches and blips. If you're affiliated with 808 State or with old school '80s electronica, this is a must-have. If you're affilliated with neither, you will probably hate it and dismiss it as obnoxious noise. Basically, for 808 State fans, it's very much like Newbuild, not as cohesive and memorable, but a good pickup if Newbuild left you hungry for more.
