Product Description

Book Description

'The Preachers On Manic Street' is a new and challenging novel by Paul Outhwaite, author of cult science-fiction satire, 'Automatic Living', and acclaimed biography of comedian Bill Hicks, 'One Consciousness'.

Manic Street is an ordinary street in a Northern seaside town sustained by old mining and steel industries and populated by characters cohesive with a sense of working class ideology and community. Set against the backdrop of Thatcherite politics, we follow these characters – the preachers – their lives, their anger and their passion and the changes they witness and experience.

Best described as a "punk novel" the book began as an experiment, Paul Outhwaite intending to use Manic Street Preachers’ songs to shape characters and narratives. "It was to take writing from the guts and not be sidetracked by the artificiality of plot arcs and polish of re-drafts," said Outhwaite.

The novel begins in 1979 and follows the "preachers" over two decades, using the first four Manic Street Preachers’ albums as a catalyst and inspiration for the narratives.
The book has a raw power, at times a ferocious polemic against capitalism and the culture of celebrity, unafraid of "the preachers" offering controversial opinions. At times though, there is lyrical beauty and poignancy in evoking a way of life which is slowly disappearing.

Presented in tune with its punk ethos, employing the dimensions of a 7" vinyl single, the book is available only as a LIMITED EDITION with 3,000 copies produced worldwide.

From the Publisher

Like the Manic Street Preachers songs, Paul Outhwaite's book can move between angry, provocative idealism and poetic, poigant lyricism. From searing anger at Thatcher, Reagan, Bush and Blair to moving, personal accounts of individuals growing old, growing distant from their innocence, this book is bold, original and thought provoking.
