As a fan of graphic novels, I had heard some interesting things about the Preacher series. But it always seemed to me that there were better things to read (Sandman, Watchmen, The Walking Dead) and only really just got round to reading these.
After a pretty shaky first novel I was convinced to buy the second because for all its faults, the first had some pretty interesting characters and was building up a fairly strong mythology. I was initially put off because it seemed to me that a lot of the writing was overly crude and used bad language in place of any genuinely interesting writing.
So I bought the second volume and realised too late my error. The mythology which had piqued my interested initially was revealed to be little more than a vehicle for the author to squeeze in more and more outrageous and despicable characters and have increasingly more offensive scenes.
I am more than happy for authors to broach adult material, and will not be offended by nudity or language in a book, if there is some actual point to it. But some of the parts to this story read like they were written by an 11 year old who had simultaneously discovered swearing and sex.
Do yourself a favour and read the Sandman series, the Walking Dead series, Maus, Watchmen, all of the Aliens novels and anything else you think might be of interest to you before you consider buying this.
