Product Description

Mark Hayes has been dubbed "Ireland's craziest and wittiest writer, a poet at times". Saying that, he has also been called "the runt of Irish litter-ature" so take your pick. Before the #1 Amazon Humour book RANDUMB: THE ADVENTURES OF AN IRISH GUY IN LA there was PREDUMB, the hilarious stories of Mark growing up in Cork, the real capital of Ireland, as they like to call it.

This is a me-moir of sorts, the history of Mark Hayes, although if his parents are within earshot he will tell you it is all lies and slander. Sex in the mud? Never. Stabbing himself by mistake? No clue. Thrown in jail? Stealing from the deaf? Becoming a hairdresser in the name of lust? Blasphemy! All that stuff about wearing grannies' clothes, frolicking in Germany and mother and daughter sexcapades all before the age of sixteen? Complete and utter spoof. Don't mention the first-class trip to Hong Kong to become a model either, just a fairytale. Particularly the part about waking up naked being hosed down by an angry Chinese man.

One thing for certain is that this book has everything you need for a laugh. So go on, buy it. See what all the fuss is about.

I kept PreDumb for my summer trip and I loved it. There was a real warmth to this book, a sense of family and home. Mum’s guiding hand, which was evident throughout, made me smile. The early years were charming and if you have a close family, events like the Christmas gatherings will ring bells of familiarity – although I did learn the odd new phrase; such as Christmas cake batter!

I laughed out loud throughout this book, as a young Mark Hayes went through the joys of growing up and through traumas like discovering he was a Granvestite, or as he dealt with the mysteriously disappearing horse outfit. Then there was the panic caused by Mrs Harris’s bleeding scalp! Not forgetting dear Dirk. Although the horrendous bowel episode - which occurred on a visit to Hong Kong - made me laugh in a kind of shuddering, squinting (so I didn’t really have to completely look at the page) way.

PreDumb is a small insight into what moulded this Irishman and how his life experiences influenced his decision to go adventuring in L.A. It’s my favourite of the three books. I think it has benefited from RanDumb and RanDumb-er being written – from the author knowing more about his craft. Subtle changes in writing technique made it easier, as a reader, to slip into the stories and find that sweet spot where the real-world dissolves around you. If you follow Mark Hayes on http://markhayes.tv/ then you know what his ideal goals are, but I hope he will keep returning to this gentler story telling, for which (in my opinion) he has a real gift.

Have been waiting for this book to be published for ages with much bated breath. Merck hasn't disappointed. Whilst not perhaps as randumb as the first two episodes, it does, as he says give the reader an in-site as to why this Irish bloke ended up in LA which frankly had always been a question on my mind. Being from the UK I completely get some of the references from his childhood and I love the fact that he has to explain them for his American audience. Strange that when here we understand many Americanisms but that's not the case the other way round. One to ponder. If you haven't read any of his books or his blog, you really should. Oh and I'm honoured and privileged to be a RanDummie. So what's the fourth book going to be about I wonder? Giddy up!!

5.0 out of 5 stars what started out as fun, light reading that I could pick and put ... 13 Aug 2014

Format:Paperback
To quote Sir John Pentland Mahaffy, “In Ireland the inevitable never happens and the unexpected constantly occurs."

I am very impressed with Mark Hayes’ latest offering,” PreDumb”; if not quite the cover art (really, Mr. Hayes?).

That being said and notwithstanding, as an author Mr. Hayes progresses literarily with each new work. In his first two volumes; what started out as fun, light reading that I could pick and put down has evolved into a real modernity of a James Joyce sort of journey.

Is it too soon to compare Mr. Hayes to Mr. Joyce? Perhaps, however I have come to anticipate with glee a new “Dumb” tome. I enjoy getting to know the subject as well as the stories.

As “RanDumb-er” was better at story telling from the author’s point of view than RanDumb and RanDumb is indeed, a very fun read; now having read PreDumb, I am really invested in this relativity new author. He has made me care about him, his family, friends and even delight in his enemies. I truly didn't expect for this to happen.

I am not going to tell you the stories; you will have to read them for yourself but I am truly and charming transported to Mark as a little boy up to and including his start; then start again, at university. (See what I mean with Sir John's quote?)

I am impatient for the next chapters, Mr. Hayes.
