Product Description

Product Description

The Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood was a group of nineteenth-century artists who challenged contemporary art with their commitment to realism and 'truth to nature'. Renowned as much for their social relationships as for their artistic ideals, the lives of the Pre-Raphaelites - Holman Hunt, Rossetti, Millais, Burne-Jones and Morris - illustrate the full range of human experience, from personal tragedy to triumph. Jan Marsh explores both the individual personalities and the artistic force which bound the circle together.

About the Author

Jan Marsh is a writer and curator. She co-curated the Pre-Raphaelite Women Artists exhibition in Manchester (1997) and is currently writing a history of Red House for the National Trust.

Great Book 10 Jan 2010
Format:Hardcover
This is a great read and I thoroughly recommend it. Full of delightful pictures. The text is written in an easy to read way and gives great information about the formation of the Pre-Raphaelite brotherhood, the painting styles and subjects of the main protagonists, and a brief overview of ther lives and the times they lived in. This is not an in depth biography of any one in particular. As you would expect from a book sponsored and published by the National Portrait Gallery, this is a factual book.

Format:Hardcover
I originally borrowed this book from the local library to help fill in the gaps in my understanding of the relationships between the various members of the pre-raphaelite brotherhood unaware of how many individuals this included. I found the potted biographies of the various members, together with the illustrations included, an excellent source of providing this information and a positive first step to investigating the seperate individuals as my interest takes me. For a relative newcomer to the movement I couldn't have wished for a better intrduction. I would strongly recommend this book to anyone similarly interested.

insight-ful 31 Aug 2006
Format:Hardcover
Renowned as much for their bohemian lifestyle as for their art, the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood brought notoriety to British painting in the nineteenth century. The Pre-Raphaelites set out to reform contemporary art, to make it `true to nature'. Yet their greater achievement was to revolutionise the idea of how contemporary artists should live, look and behave. Amazing book, and a very interesting read.
