Book Description

23 July 2004
Praying Like A Woman is the expression of one woman's journey through life and faith, yet its themes of struggle, suffering, and joy, are universal. It is both intensely personal, and also appealing and relevant to all women. 'My hope is that whoever picks up this book may be encouraged - to pray as and who they are, towards who they may yet become.' Nicola Slee. The collection contains prayers, poems, songs, psalms, canticles, litanies, laments and creeds, as well as personal reflections. The areas covered include traditional areas for prayer, but also diverge into more specific themes, particularly relevant for women - such as the body and health. Praying Like A Woman is ideal for women who want to explore and develop their faith. The author hopes it will help other women to live into the experience of being a woman, in the particular time and place in which they find themselves, in the eyes of others and of God. ""[The] poems and prayers bear witness to a faith of considerable depth and raw honesty, as she holds her God to account for her own sufferings and those of women throughout the world and across time. And then comes joy - exuberant as the spring, and as unexpected as the resurrection."" Janet Morley (author of All Desires Known)

5.0 out of 5 stars A Rich and Passionate Book 25 Oct 2005
By A Customer
Nicola Slee writes from a vantage point of first hand experience. She uses honest and valuable concepts, with language that is rich, clear and links in with the life experiences many women, if not all women, will be able to identify with. A delighful book and well worth having. God is spoken with not as a ruling "male image", but one who is feminine too, understands the needs of women and can be accessed by the female gender.

5.0 out of 5 stars Challenging read for all 25 Aug 2008
By Malcolm
I bought this book for my daughter, having heard Nicola read a few extracts at a poetry reading. My daughter being very interested in Feminism and Theology, and fascinated by liturgy, although she would not call herself a Christian. She came straight back to me and said 'you must read this, so that we can talk about it'. I haven't read it all, but what I've read is fascinating and challenging, sometimes painful, sometimes amusing. Although written from a woman's viewpoint, I feel it has much to offer men too, especially in challenging us all as to how we relate to God. We all need to stand before God naked and as we truly are (after all, God knows the truth about us doesn't she), but also proudly, not totally cowed. We all need to reclaim our forgotten history, our sisters whose stories have been untold. Nicola points us in this direction, and does a lot of work on our behalf. Thoroughly recommended.
