The use of prayer beads, which has a long history in practical spirituality, is now becoming more widespread among Protestants. Doerr and Owens here show readers how to use what have become known as Anglican or Christian prayer beads. This is a lovely little book which aims to assist the Christian with their daily prayers. In our modern world, finding the time to shut off and obtain relative peace and quiet can be near impossible. It is difficult to pray on the go as our other senses are bombarded with useless distracting information.
Praying with beads was unfortunately more or less killed off for us Protestants at the Reformation. Ever since, rosaries have been viewed with disdain by many as an antiquated popish rite, comparable with the selling of indulgences. Yet Anglican prayer beads or Christian prayer beads are an extremely useful way of focusing the mind on prayer by using the sense of touch. Holding prayer beads whilst praying is an amazingly effective way of eliminating some of the distractions which can ruin times of prayer.
`Praying with Beads' begins with a brief history of prayer beads before describing how modern Christian prayer beads can be used. A diagram shows the differences between the beads and explains the symbolism of the entire device. The book then suggests prayers for morning, afternoon and night using verses of scripture from the Bible, for the entire year. The authors clearly express from the beginning of this book that the individual is free to create their own prayer routine using Christian prayer beads as the aim of the beads is to provide a prayer enhancement, not a prayer replacement.
If you are struggling to pray during the busy week away from the relative calm of the Sunday morning service, may I suggest you buy and read this short book to see whether or not Christian prayer beads would assist you in your prayer time.

I love trying new prayer practices. Not all strike a chord with me and draw me closer to the heart of God...but many do, and my prayer life has been enriched in recent years by the discovery of fixed-hour prayer, prayer labyrinths, chant, and more. It's almost as if praying saints of past generations actually knew a thing or two.
I was, therefore, intrigued to discover the book, Praying with Beads: Daily Prayers for the Christian Year, by Nan Lewis Doerr and Virginia Stem Owens. It consists of a compelling and instructive introduction, followed by morning, noon, and evening prayers for use with a string of prayer beads. The prayers follow the Christian calendar throughout the liturgical year.
I purchased an inexpensive string of 34 beads and used the Advent prayers throughout that season, and was wonderfully helped by the practice (the "Additional Sources and Materials" section at the back of the book offers helpful guidance for pricing and purchasing prayer beads). I heartily agree with Phyllis Tickle's endorsement on the back of the book, when she says, "Protestant Christians, whether liturgical or not, will find here not only a missing part of their heritage, but also much counsel and instruction for their future practice of the faith."

Did you know that praying with beads or a rosary is a very contemplative activity? This book provides helpful options for using an Anglican rosary (though it could be adopted for use with any set of beads). I've also found it a good way to memorize some Scripture.

The introduction to this book is rich in rosary history, and shows what the Anglican/Episcopal Rosary looks like.
It gives us a prayer to pray each week of the Church Year, in each season, plus gives us a Christmas Eve prayer, a Christmas day prayer...With prayers for special saints days like Remembrance of St Stephen.
I recommend this book to all my Christian friends who love praying. With at least 52 prayers here, my Church Year will be full of prayer to my Lord!
