Book Description

The electrifying ninth thriller in Faye Kellerman's superb series featuring Pete Decker

Product Description

The brutal murder of Dr. Azor Sparks in an alley behind a restaurant is greeted with public outrage and a demand for swift, sure justice. But the investigation into the well-known surgeon's death is raising too many questions and providing too few answers for homicide detective Lieutenant Peter Decker.

Why, for example, would the family of a man so beloved respond to his slaying with more surprise than grief? And what linked a celebrated doctor with strict fundamentalist beliefs to a gang of outlaw bikers? But the most unsettling connection of all is the one that ties the tormented Sparks family to Peter Decker's own -- and the secrets shared by a renegade Catholic priest...and Decker's wife, Rina Lazarus.

Dr. Azor Moses Sparks is a gifted and renowned heart surgeon who is respected by millions. So when Peter Decker, the long suffering hero of Kellerman's novels, is called to a gruesome crime scene in a dark back alley he is shocked to find the very same doctor is the victim. In his new role as Lieutenant, Decker and his detectives Dunn, Oliver, Webster and Martinez go about the task of finding out who - and more importantly why someone - murdered this great man. At the same time, Decker has to deal with Sparks' family, who have all turned to eldest son Abram to take over Azor's duties as patriarch. The devoutly Catholic priest carries out his duties at home, as well as in his parish, while under the intense scrutiny of the Devonshire homicide department. And Father Bram's long running aquaintance with Deckers wife, Rina, and her two sons Samuel and Jacob doesn't help Decker's case, especially when evidence starts pointing towards him. Kellerman is wonderful at weaving together classy whodunnits with her obvious passion of Judaism, but in Prayers For The Dead she attempts a well structured debate of Judaism versus Christianity. Some readers may get bored of Rina and Bram's extensive dicussions on religion but the conclusion of this wonderful novel is worth the price alone.
A very well written novel that is surely one of Kellerman's finer works.

Faye Kellerman's - Prayer for the dead is amazing and lives up to all the other decker and Rina books I have read. I would recommend this book to anyone who like murder mysteries as well as crime novel lovers

Reading this book was the equivalent of watching paint dry. The plot is frankly ridiculous even for fiction and the author should take some lessons from her husband on how to move a plot forward. Anyone reading this because they liked her husband's work, as I did, will be sorely disappointed.
