Product Description

Dr Azor Sparks is a genius. A famous surgeon set to transform the chances for heart transplant patients. He's also a pillar of the local church and a devoted family man. So who would want to murder him? The answer, Lt. Peter Decker concludes, is many people. Sparks was obsessed by religion and his medical crusades.Yet he had odd hobbies, like riding with a pack of bikers. His family, too, is not harmonious. The influence of Bram, the son who defied his Protestant father to become a Catholic priest, appears to be all that's preventing them from destroying each other. And, as beneficiaries of an astonishingly large trust fund, they all stand to gain from his death. But then the evidence from a second murder points, unmistakably, to Bram, whom Decker thought was highly unlikely to be involved...

Dr. Azor Moses Sparks is a gifted and renowned heart surgeon who is respected by millions. So when Peter Decker, the long suffering hero of Kellerman's novels, is called to a gruesome crime scene in a dark back alley he is shocked to find the very same doctor is the victim. In his new role as Lieutenant, Decker and his detectives Dunn, Oliver, Webster and Martinez go about the task of finding out who - and more importantly why someone - murdered this great man. At the same time, Decker has to deal with Sparks' family, who have all turned to eldest son Abram to take over Azor's duties as patriarch. The devoutly Catholic priest carries out his duties at home, as well as in his parish, while under the intense scrutiny of the Devonshire homicide department. And Father Bram's long running aquaintance with Deckers wife, Rina, and her two sons Samuel and Jacob doesn't help Decker's case, especially when evidence starts pointing towards him. Kellerman is wonderful at weaving together classy whodunnits with her obvious passion of Judaism, but in Prayers For The Dead she attempts a well structured debate of Judaism versus Christianity. Some readers may get bored of Rina and Bram's extensive dicussions on religion but the conclusion of this wonderful novel is worth the price alone.

A very well written novel that is surely one of Kellerman's finer works.

Hang in there... 25 Jun 2002
By D. Campbell - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Mass Market Paperback
This is the first Faye Kellerman novel that I have read. I enjoy her husband's books very much, so I gave her a try. The story seemed to take quite awhile to get going. At first the character development was not the pace I enjoy, but I'm very glad I continued the book. I wound up enjoying her characters, the plot twists, pretty much everything about it. It even piqued my curiosity about Judaism more so than I have ever been. Thumbs up, my dear. I am definitely buying more of this series.

The weakest link so far in the Decker/Lazarus series 3 Aug 2006
By JHM - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Mass Market Paperback
The book starts off well, as a mystery should, with the events of the murder of Dr. Sparks. But then it spends the next 300 or so pages batting back and forth, and not really going anywhere. Plus the relationship between Rita Lazarus' deceased husband and the priest are totally incongruious, as I'm sure Kellerman realized when she threw in this rather burdensome plot twist.

However, the end of the book really does pull some surprises. You just have to plod through the middle to get there. Not her best work.

Absorbing Read and Series 18 Dec 2005
By M. Levitt - classical music buff - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Mass Market Paperback
This was my first Faye Kellerman novel involving Dectective Peter Decker and Rina Lazarus. I thoroughly enjoyed it, read the sequel, and then the first novel in the Peter Decker/ Rina Lazarus series, Ritual Bath, piqued by how these two characters met, and how their relationship evolves.

The best novels in this series employ gripping, page turning mysteries, the human aspect of the evolving relationship between Peter and Rina, and explanations of Judaism in somewhat the same way as Harry Kemelman's Rabbi David Small mysteries, or the older G.K. Chesterton's Father Brown mysteries, the latter combining great mysteries with interesting explications of Catholicism.

Warning: You might get hooked to the series!
