Product Description

Product Description

Multi-award winning spirituality writer Philip Yancey is loved throughout the world for his honest, insightful and inspirational writing. PRAYER: DOES IT MAKE ANY DIFFERENCE? carries all the hallmarks of classic Yancey, a journalist by training. His quest to unravel the mysteries of prayer reads as the journal of a fellow traveller: questioning, challenging, lamenting the unexplainable and rejoicing in the discovery of awesome insights. His journey is beautifully illustrated with moving true stories drawn from around the world.

PRAYER: DOES IT MAKE ANY DIFFERENCE? tackles the following questions: What is prayer? What difference does it make? Why and how should we pray? What about unanswered prayer? How should we understand prayer for physical healing?

Focusing on such a universal theme, this is potentially Yancey's biggest book yet. To date, his books have sold over 14 million copies, and have been translated into 25 languages. His first book with Hodder, SOUL SURVIVOR, sold over 90,000 copies in just five years.

Yancey is, as always, concise and honest. Honesty is one of the trademarks of Yancey's writing, and you need a fair chunk of that when researching prayer. He acknowledges it's hard for most of us to pray, my favourite line: 'It's more important to God that you 'show up' than what you actually pray'.

In my long journey into prayer, this book helped me feel more 'normal'. He deals with all the problems I face. Very encouraging, made me want to keep on going.

This is mt first Philip Yancey book and I`ve been devouring it in any spare moments I get; on the train, waiting in lines, even on the toilet!

I found that I had some real problems with prayer and how best to approach it and how to get motivated; so I was interested in this book. At the start of the book Yancey explains "My main qualification for writing about prayer is that I feel unqualified - and genuinely want to learn."

I think that this humble and honest approach to writing about prayer really helped me. He peppers his writing with a variety of short interview extracts made by everyday people on prayer; their struggles and their accomplishments.

Above all the book is insightful and although it doesn`t teach you how to prayer (it`s not a guide) I found that it made prayer seem like less of a chore and more rewarding. Thanks Philip!

I thought this was an excellent book, Yancey shows a real understanding of the problems and confusions people have about prayer. I found I could only read a few pages at a time because I'd need to stop and think about what he'd said. I'm a person who'd never really struggled with the concept of prayer until recently when many prayers for a sick friend went apparently unanswered. In reading Yancey's book i wasn't expecting to find any black and white answers (and i didn't) but i found many examples of people who'd felt how i felt, encouragement to keep praying generally and a few suggestions that made sense to me as to why many of these things happen. I've read 3 of Yancey's books now and as always i found his honesty refreshing. I definately recommend this book.
