The hero of the book, Barney Thomson, has once again evaded the long arm of the law and is drawn back to his home town of Glasgow. Unfortunately, life on the run is not for Barney and he hands himself in at the local police station - only to be told that he is th 300th Barney Thomson willing to give himself up. What now? If the police don't want him, what will he do next? As if by fate he is drawn to a barbers shop with a vacancy for Barney's talents. Soon he is behind the chair doing what he lives to do. However, it is not long before murder follows behind him and again Barney is being blamed for the most recent spate of murders in Glasgow. Neither is it long before Strathclyde's crime busting duo, Mulholland and Proudfoot, are on his trail once more - although this time under duress from the Chief Constable.

It is not long before murder and mayhem ensue once more and needless to say Barney finds himself in the centre of it, when all he wants is to have sex with the local leader of his branch of "Murderers Anonymous"! Yet again the humour is superb and in your face. One chapter in particular- where Barney and his new boss are visited by a consultant offering his services - had me rolling about in laughter. Likewise, Barney's efforts at poetry, in a bid to en-trance the woman of his desires, is hilarious.

To top it all the plot is excellent with a few good twists, and even if you work out the real murderer's identity early on, the motive will have you howling with laughter.

Douglas Lindsay has done it yet again with this excellent work, the third in the Barney Thomson series -- I've read and enjoyed them all! From the moment the hapless Thomson is set loose on the heads of Scotland, through to his wacky weekend ordeal with the gang from Murderers Anonymous, Douglas's captivating comedy has the reader on edge one minute and laughing out loud the next.

Though very Scottish in its content, 'A prayer for Barney Thompson' was accessble even to this American reader who knows pish-all about football...but is sporting an awfully nice "Sean Connery '68."

Read the book! You'll laugh, you'll cry, and you'll NEVER view a visit to the barber in quite the same way!

Once I had read the first of the three Barney Thomson stories, I just had to read the two follow-ups in the trilogy, one after the other! I honestly cannot say which of the three I found funnier, as they were all so good! This one, however, had an unexpected twist in the tale and I loved it all the more for that! Once again, the plot was absurdly funny, as were the characters, and the thick Scottish dialect brought them all wonderfully to life! In the hands of this author, the things discussed in the barber's shop (just ordinary chit-chat about nothing important at all) took on a life of their own! The discussion about the Teletubbies had me laughing so hard and loud that tears ran down my face, waking up my husband who had been in a deep sleep! Brilliant stuff - you've got to buy it!
