Product Description

Pray is bestselling author Nick Hornby's extraordinary account of an astonishing season

'That is why there is NOTHING better than sport' Kevin Pietersen

The 2011-12 Premier League season finished on an afternoon so extraordinary that it prompted Kevin Pietersen's tweet. Yet this was just the climax of an incredible season. By May fans of most clubs had been enthralled, appalled, depressed, elated, shocked and enraged. Along the way football had somehow managed to encompass politics, high finance, the law and matters of life and death.

Beginning with the weekend of 28 August when the Man Utd demolition of Arsenal 8-2 and the Man City demolition of Spurs 5-1 showed what was to come, he concentrates on a number of games whose significance went beyond the immediate result: the October games with alleged rascist incidents, the fairy-tale return of Thierry Henry, the collapse of Fabrice Muamba, the Carling Cup Final where Liverpool's victory only served to point up the club's problems, the unusual (but increasingly more common) 4-4 draw between Man Utd and Everton...

It was a season of tumultuous incident and enormous entertainment, a season more glorious than most. Read all about it, and relive it, here, from the award-winning author of the football classic Fever Pitch.

Nick Hornby has captivated readers and achieved widespread critical acclaim for his comic, well-observed novels High Fidelity, How to be Good, A Long Way Down (shortlisted for the Whitbread Award), Slam and Juliet, Naked. His three works of non-fiction, 31 Songs (shortlisted for the National Book Critics Circle Award), Fever Pitch (winner of the William Hill Sports Book of the Year Award) and The Complete Polysyllabic Spree are also available from Penguin.

3.0 out of 5 stars A Book of Three Quarters 6 July 2012

I enjoyed this little e-book but I have to say that I was left wanting more.

The first chapter was insightful and thought-provoking, shedding new light for me on the way the top clubs think and what they can realistically achieve (an issue highlighted even more by the current RVP 'saga').

However, I have to say that the chapters that followed didn't seem to provide the same depth for me. They were certainly worth reading but didn't add as much to the events that they described.

I got to 74% through the book and found I'd reached the last day of the season. What would follow? And now here's the real negative. The last 25% of the book is just adverts for Nick Hornby's other novels. And other people's work too!

You can only feel let down by this and wish that maybe things had ended more strongly. As an Arsenal fan, I am all too familiar with this feeling of course.

An enjoyable read, entertaining but for the cynical marketing involved. Bit like Premiership football really.

3.0 out of 5 stars Yin and Yang.... 15 July 2012

The script is good as one would expect from Hornby though it could contain a bit more meat on the bones. Disappointed that the last 24% of the content is given over to reviews of other Hornby/Penguin publications. Left a bit of a sour taste at £1.99 for what basically seems to be a vehicle for advertising other works.

2.0 out of 5 stars Too short 5 Sep 2012

I love Nick Hornby books, and actually have already read all of his advertised books which take up the last 26% of this book.

He has interesting thoughts on the money in football, the current game vs the old and the race rows in last season, but that's really it.
Some points he just even says Saturday xx October, Blackburn X QPR x
And no comments, almost like he was going to come back and fill in the comments but didn't bother.

The book is 3% by the opening page, and by 74% or so it's finished.

I understand this is a short book, but provides little content, and I finished it on a 20min train journey into work. I think I expected a little more of Hornby and a bit more content for £1.99

4.0 out of 5 stars A reflection on a fab season 4 May 2013

The reason I liked this book is because it an honest account of a season that highlighted how great supporting a football club can be. It does not go into the technical, fancy, tactical merits of the game but does give Hornby a forum to reflect on a season that was like no other.

A great little read - but was disappointed by the 25 advertising at the back too like most reviews.

5.0 out of 5 stars If you loved Fever Pitch you'll love this. 16 July 2012
The perfect digest of the season. I wish Nick Hornby would write more on football - he is better than anyone.

Fantastic, funny and clever on the John Terry/Ferdinand race row.
