Amazon.co.uk Review

A reindeer doesn't have to fly to be magical to someone, and Prancer proves the point in an unassuming and plainspoken way. This 1989 family film stars Rebecca Harrell as nine-year-old Jessica, a motherless schoolgirl raised (and largely ignored) by her bereaved and embittered father (Sam Elliot), an apple farmer. While Jessica's dad struggles to keep food on the family table, the little heroine worries over the fate of a wounded reindeer she meets and wistfully identifies as a member of Santa's sled crew. The story may sound overly precious, but the film is grittier and more realistic than that. Far more concerned with wobbly family relationships than gilded escapism, Prancer is a rare family film that can entertain without invoking fluffy enchantment. It was followed 12 years later by a sequel, Prancer Returns. --Tom Keogh

Synopsis

A motherless young girl living with her father on a failing farm finds herself inspired by her belief in Santa Claus and his flying reindeer. When she discovers that a real reindeer has fallen into ill health, she nurses it back to its prime, believing it is the actual Prancer, so she can return it to Santa and Prancer might pull his sleigh.

5.0 out of 5 stars A enchanting winter tale for the whole family to enjoy, 7 Sep 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Prancer [VHS] [1989] (VHS Tape)
Prancer is a story that will warm the hearts of both children and adults alike. It all takes place around a little girl called Jessie and her firm belief in all that makes christmas is real. When she finds a hurt reindeer, Jessie is certain that it is Prancer, one of Santas reindeer and she makes it her mission to look after him and nurse him back to health. Throughout this enchanting tale, she encounters numerous people and changes their opinion on christmas and the magic that goes hand in hand with it. Some people may be critical of it and find it a little to soppy, but it captures everything christmas stands for and the how ,children enjoy the magic of it all. I would recommend this to anyone, who wants a nice winter tale to warm the heart.

4.0 out of 5 stars A More Serious Christmas Fantasy, 14 Jan 2009
By Mark Baker (Santa Clarita, CA United States) - See all my reviews
(TOP 50 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
It is getting close to Christmas, which means that it is Jessica Riggs' (Rebecca Harrell) favorite season. The eight-year-old knows things are hard at home. After all, her mother had died and her father John (Sam Elliott) is having a hard time making ends meet on the family apple farm.

One day, Jessica sees a reindeer roaming through the woods. She immediately decides it is Prancer since it looks like a picture she has of Santa's reindeer and since she saw the plastic Prancer fall from the town's Christmas display a few days ago.

When she finds the reindeer again a few days later in the family barn, she quickly moves him to the shed and tries to nurse him back to health in time to join Santa on Christmas Eve. Can she do it without her father finding out? Is it really Prancer?

I've been meaning to watch this film since it came out 20 years ago and finally sat down and did just that. I will admit it was much more serious then I expected it to be. Jessica's home life is pretty serious with John even thinking it might be better if she went to live with her aunt. Additionally, there is a strong theme about faith and reality, played out most obviously when Jessica's best friend announces she no longer believes in Santa or God.

And yet this movie isn't all sadness. Jessica's enthusiasm and faith is actually heart warming. And her spirit rubs off on several characters of the course of the movie. I especially enjoyed the scenes with Cloris Leachman's hermit of a neighbor. The ending is completely satisfying. In fact, I bet it would be hard to watch it and not be moved to tears (in a good way).

If you want something different with a bit of a serious bent to it, check this movie out. It's an enjoyable Christmas escape with a bit more of the real world thrown in.
